Keep KLIMBing

Tax deductible

20% of the earth’s population is dyslexic and many are undiagnosed. Dyslexia is a hereditary learning disability among people of normal intelligence who have difficulty acquiring and processing language. Dyslexia can affect a person’s ability to read, write, spell, and even speak, which clearly makes school an extraordinary challenge. The lack of affordable access to intervention, as well as the lack of awareness of the deep impact reading trouble has on a young persons confidence, puts a huge portion of our population at risk for failure.

Through the dyslexia diagnosis of my 3 children, I became acutely aware of these profound, often unmet, needs. As a result, I founded KLIMB, a nonprofit corporation, which helps children like mine to see their true potential and "keep KLIMBing".

KLIMB's mission is to educate, inspire and empower young students struggling with early literacy. One way we do this is through our after school and summer literacy program, Keep KLIMBing. I am reaching out to you today because we need funding to sustain, develop and grow this important program. Any amount you can donate will help us provide critical intervention to children who desperately need it.

Keep KLIMBing Overview

Keep KLIMBing is a mentor based literacy program which provides low or no cost assessment and intervention to young struggling students.

Our program pairs trained teenage mentors with young buddies to provide one-on-one reading instruction and remediation. For 85-90% of poor readers, early intervention programs have proven to increase reading skills to average reading levels (www.understood.org). Additionally, Keep KLIMBing is unique to other reading buddy programs because we implement an explicit structured literacy curriculum in addition to reading practice.

Importantly, our goal to improve children's literacy extends beyond academics to a child's well being and sense of self. Confidence, which is severely affected in children with reading difficulty, is a critical growth component in our program.

We completed our pilot program last summer and our first full program is currently underway. These intial programs continue to provide valuable feedback which is critical in developing and improving our future programs. If you could find it in your heart to help these children, the impact on their future could be life changing.
