Please help us raise the funds we need to hire experts and a legal team to put a stop to the proposed Fingerboards mine for good.
In 2021 the Fingerboards Mineral Sands project had the highest number of objections to a mine ever during the Environment Effects process. 900 of the 910 submitters opposed the mine. More than 100 people spoke against the mine at the Panel Hearing, clearly showing how flawed the project was.
Our previous fundraising enabled us to hire experts who clearly showed the dangers of the project and the misinformation in Kalbar's EES.
In his assessment of the EES, Richard Wynne, the then Minister for Environment, agreed that the project posed unacceptable and unsurmountable risks.
However the current government has ignored Minister Wynne's assessment and approved the extension of Kalbar's (rebranded as Gippsland Critical Minerals) Retention Licences in the area.
The community thought they had saved the Fingerboards from what would be an unmitigated environmental, economic and social disaster.
But the Fingerboards area is under threat again.
GCM is chasing government subsidies and handouts, has a slick marketing team trying to buy social licence and is claiming it can mitigate the risks of the mine. We know that is impossible and our land, rivers, community and local economy are under severe threat yet again.
We also know that all their claims that they will reduce the mine size, put it further away from the river, reduce dust and pollution of our surface and groundwater, and reduce the amount of mature trees destroyed, can and will be retracted at the stroke of a bureaucrat's pen.
We need your help to stop this cursed mine once and for all. We will have to undergo another EES process and are raising money to hire experts and a legal team to prove once and for all that that a mineral sands/rare earths mine at the Fingerboards is the most idiotic proposal ever to be put forward in Victoria.
