Two years ago I watched a video showing the opening ceremony of the World Championships of Youth Ultimate Frisbee (link below) and thought how incredible it was that a sport could bring together so many different cultures and countries. It is like the Olympics of Ultimate Frisbee. As I watched the competition, I made a goal for myself that in 2020, when the next Under 20 World Championship took place, I would be playing for team USA. For the past two years I have been working towards this goal with the support of my coaches and teammates. In September, I was selected as one of the top 100 male youth players in the country invited to try out. In November, despite hyperextending my knee two weeks earlier, I went to California and gave it my all in a grueling two day, fourteen hour tryout. On January 3rd I got an invitation to be on the team and represent the United States in Sweden.
In order for me to attend, I will need to raise $4,000 to pay for airfare, lodging, transportation, tournament fees and a mandatory training camp. I worked last summer and plan to get a job again when my school load lightens in the Spring, but this is a tough time for me and my parents to fund this trip because we are trying to save enough to send me to University of Oregon in the fall where I hope to major in Journalism. I have to commit to being on the team before the money is raised, so this is a leap of faith for me. Any amount of donation would be extremely helpful. Whether you can or can't make a donation sharing this GoFundMe link with other friends and family or sharing it in any other way would be extremely appreciated. I will be posting stories and pictures on Instagram (@kealioop) of my World Championship adventure before and during the competition.
