Build a drum kit teaching studio!

My name is Kasey Peters and I've been teaching drums in Northern Ireland for the past 17 years. I'm from Los Angeles but have made Belfast my home for the last two decades.

Today, as school music programmes, and the arts in general, continue to get cut, I help support the arts in my own grassroots way. My teachers made invaluable, lasting impressions on me, and I hope I do the same now, while giving back to my community.

When I went to school in LA in the 70s and 80s, we had the most amazing music departments, full of musical instruments, with inspirational teachers and music classes of every type. I majored in music, taking jazz band, concert band, orchestra, theory, choir and musical theatre. I could take home any instrument I wanted and played in marching band instead of PE.

I started teaching drums in Northern Ireland in 2001 as a peripatetic teacher in schools and privately at homes, bussing my way through various counties (before I drove) while teaching in the evenings in a friend's garage in Carryduff. After building up a solid roster of students, I was able to move to commercial premises.

But after six years, rent and rates have become prohibitive making leases untenable. Finding an affordable, soundproofed studio, a permanent premises, has been very difficult. If I could build my own studio, a standing school/site, it will enable me to continue contributing to the arts, while helping to fill the musical void in schools.

I see as many at 65 students per week and have helped hundreds get their graded examinations with most achieving merits and distinctions. I help prepare students for GCSEs, A-Levels and university auditions. We learn how to read music, work towards playing in bands, theatre shows and beyond.

Constructing a soundproofed studio is very expensive. It requires an architect, builders, construction, diggers, skips, plumbing & electrical work. I have a plot, I just need to break ground. The location will be in East Belfast, Ballyhackamore.

Would you kindly consider helping me build my own drum studio as a permanent location for teaching? Your generous donation would help support children and adults in Northern Ireland to become drummers and musicians and continue to rock on!
