This is the story of our beautiful daughter Karla.
My name is Scott Keele and my wife's name is Lovey Demmert-Keele, daughter of Joseph & Dorothy Demmert. We are writing this story on behalf of our daughter Karla (age 40) and her daughter Kaleena (age 10). On May 17, 2016 Karla was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer and Stage 3 kidney failure. At the time of diagnosis the cancer had spread through almost every lymph node in her body and we were told that her cancer was inoperable and incurable. Since then Karla has been hospitalized on more than 9 occasions and she was in a Rehabilitation Facility for 2 months due to chronic kidney failure, sepsis, dehydration, multiple infections and she has had 12 blood transfusions. Karla was given chemotherapy for a short duration but is unable to tolerate it due to her chronic infections which would cause hospitalizations and she was in a vicious circle of chemo, infections and hospitalizations.
On Tuesday, November 2, 2016 a conversation with Karla's oncologist revealed that the cancer has progressed to Karla's brain and to her neck. As you can only imagine, our family is in total devastation to hear this tragic news about Karla and reality is setting in. We knew this day may come but we certainly did not expect it to come so soon. We were informed that there were three options of treatment, chemotherapy, radiation or hospice all resulting in 2-3 months life expectancy. Of the three options Karla chose hospice. She is now in a nursing facility with 24/7 care until infections are gone and she can return home with hospice to spend her final days.
We are now making arrangements for funeral and burial services as she is so weak and frail that we fear the chronic infections will take her sooner. We are also making important decisions for our granddaughter Kaleena on who will raise her and how we will pay for her future expenses. Lovey has had multiple back surgeries and I work on the Bering Sea so living with us is not an option that we have.
We are praying that our friends, family, neighbors, friends of friends and anyone who is willing to can help us raise funds to ensure that all medical bills are paid, loss of work wages are covered as I have not been able to work, funeral expenses, and we can provide financially for for our granddaughter's future.
Thank you all for taking time to read this story about our beloved daughter Karla. Her and Kaleena have been our world.
If you are unable to donate, PLEASE SHARE our story to as many of your Facebook friends as possible in order for us to reach our goal. We would like to say thank you in advance as every donation will be truly appreciated. We also appreciate all prayers during this difficult time as Karla is our only child and our story will sadly not have a happy ending.
Much Love,
Scott & Lovey Demmert-Keele
