My sister Karen 'Scotty' Young (38 years old), from Inverness in Scotland has just been diagnosed with Stage 2 Breast Cancer. She is a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Nurse currently working at Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. She has lived in the USA for the last 10 years looking after and caring deeply for many many children... but now it is her that needs looking after and cared for.
Karen has always been a generous and happy girl, loving life and living it to the full and although this news has devastated her, and all who love her, she is going to roll up her sleeves and fight this head on and kick Cancer where it hurts!
Reason for this Campaign
Two weeks ago Karen underwent surgery (a Mastectomy) and will need to undergo an intensive 6 month course of Chemotherapy followed by Radiotherapy in order to ensure the Cancer is eliminated. She does have health insurance but the co-pay payments are large and she has no savings to help her to pay for these. She is therefore either going to be forced into major debt... or not afford to pay for the Chemotherapy treatment she needs to survive... as I'm sure everyone can understand the latter is not an option...
She will have around $6,000 of co-pay to find and added to that is a treatment that is not covered by her insurance.
Karen has a deep love of children and seeing her play and care for her nieces and nephews proves that. She would love one day to have children but understands that the Chemotherapy may adversely affect that. Therefore she would love to have options so one day her dream may become a reality.
The cost of any of these options is around $5,000.
Karen's determination has had a real affect on me and I want to help her as much as possible. Unfortunately I don't have the money to support her so I have decided to set up this page to appeal to her wide network of friends to help her! It would mean the world to Karen and also to us, her family who all live 5,000 miles away in Scotland, if we were able to raise this target.
Cancer has already taken my dad... and I darn sure I am not going to stand by and let it take my little sister...
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for any help you can give
Neil
Please note that the fund has been set up in £GBP and not $US. The exchange rate is currently around $1.5 to every £1.
