8th Grade Washington DC Trip

KIPP CONNECT Middle School (KCMS) is a Title I school in the Gulfton community of Houston, TX. We pride ourselves in providing rich academic and character education opportunities for our students. Part of that mission includes an end-of-year trip. These trips – to Austin, New Mexico, and Atlanta in previous years – are meant to celebrate students’ growth and learning over the course of the schoolyear. They also widen our students’ world view by showing them other parts of the country and challenging them to think in different ways and consider different perspectives. They are truly the capstone of a year at KIPP.

This year, KCMS 8th graders are going to Washington, DC. This trip is aimed at bringing concepts learned in middle school history class to life. Students will be able to step foot inside the Supreme Court building and the Capitol building. They will visit the National Archives and see the real document of the United States Constitution. They will see the MLK Monument and connect it to their experiences learning about the Civil Rights Movement.

Our 8th graders live the reality of much of the political discussion happening in Washington, DC. They closely observed the 2016 presidential election in their history class, analyzing the rhetoric that the candidates used and the different parties’ platforms. The opportunity for our students from Gulfton, a largely immigrant community, to be able to travel to the city where political decisions are made will be a life-changing experience. It is vital for them to see and be seen in these places and spaces of power for our country.

Our focus for our 8th graders this year, our founding class of KCMS, was to create leaders of our school and our community. Our goal for this field trip is that our students can see themselves as leaders for our country’s future, as well, despite the obstacles they may face along the way.

However, traveling to Washington, DC, from Houston requires more than a vision for what our students will learn and how they will grow from this experience. It requires the funds to make a trip this large possible, with the largest expenses being buses ($23,380) and accommodations ($18,000).

Please consider donating to help us bring this vision to life. Any amount helps! Our students will never forget your genorisity in helping them have this invaluable experience.
