"A Sustainable Foundation"

Hopes for the Coming Year

Just as a sustainable foundation of practice is critical to growth on the path, so too is a sustainable physical foundation essential to support the Sangha. Karuna Buddhist Vihara hopes to continue building the foundational infrastructure of the two-year old Hermitage this coming year. The support provided during this year’s Kathina on Sunday, October 24, will focus on urgent current needs and future growth in these key ways.

Water: Sadly, the drought affecting so much of the west has also impacted the spring that is the Vihara’s sole water supply – now dry until the rainy season.  In the short term and as a top priority, the plan is to add another 5,000-gallon water tank. This will complete a system of water storage that will support residents and guests for a six month dry season.

Roads, a Bridge, and Kuti sites: The sites for the next kutis are uphill from the main building and fairly inaccessible. In order to prepare for kuti construction, land for small access roads and kutis has been cleared. A bridge kit which is durable and safe for small vehicles has been purchased for the upper creek leading to two kuti sites. A second bridge to cross the main creek is planned, leading to one kuti site and the possibility of several others. Once the kuti sites, roads and bridges have been prepared, over time five kutis can then be constructed uphill.

Utility Terrain Vehicle (UTV) & Trailer: A UTV can be used in challenging terrain, like the Hermitage,  where using a truck is not practical.  Once the roads are finished, the UTV can haul construction materials to the kuti building sites and eventually can be used to take elders up the hill to the future elder’s kuti.

Solar Array: Lastly, there will be an initial exploration into options to add solar power to complement the current generator. One suggestion has been to suspend the array from the top of a redwood tree. Research and planning are ongoing.

We look forward to sharing this time in community with you and with our guests. We will be joined by bhikkhunis from Aloka Vihara Forest Monastery and others.

This year, there are two sponsor groups. Shalini and Dilrukshi Abeygoonesekera of the San Francisco Bay Area, and Jocelyn White and Linda Ward of Portland, Oregon are honored and grateful to be supporting the Ayyas on this auspicious occasion.
