We are the KAT6A and Friends Association
, created by parents of children who were diagnosed with KAT6A disease. There are only 250 cases diagnosed in the world and about 20 cases in Spain affected by this syndrome, mostly children.

What is KAT6A?

It is a rare disease, resulting from a mutation in the gene KAT6A, is a de novo mutation. All of them were detected by a massive sequencing test , which is in the last link, after having gone through other genetic tests that were negative. As it is a very broad gene, people who have this disease can be more or less affected.

Its general characteristics are:

- General delay in development
- Intellectual disability
- Feeding difficulties
- Severe speech delay or absence
- Heart Affections
- Vision problems
- Abnormal muscle tone (hypertonia or hypotonia)

In addition, some of them can suffer:

Epilepsy, Seizures or Absences.

KAT6A clinic

Currently we have signed a collaboration agreement with the scientific team of the professor of the University Pablo de Olavide José Antonio Sánchez Alcázar, an international reference in the study of rare diseases, who develops his work in the Andalusian Center of Developmental Biology, a mixed center of the CSIC, UPO and the Andalusian Government.

The study is part of the MITOCURE Project, focused on mitochondrial diseases, since, as Professor Sánchez Alcázar explains, "recent hypotheses point out that mutations in the KAT6A gene affect mitochondrial function in a secondary way and that drugs that act at mitochondrial level (such as carnitine and vitamin B5) are capable of reversing the clinical phenotypes of the disease, that is, its symptoms or relevant clinical consequences".

For the study of personalized therapies, in this project, the scientific team will evaluate the therapeutic effectiveness of the different treatments that act at mitochondrial level in the fibroblasts derived from the patients and in neuronal cells generated by direct reprogramming. In this way, they will experience the effects of the different drugs and doses in vitro on the patients' own tissues, in order to observe the results individually.

KAT6A research funding

We families have high hopes for this study. We see it as a real opportunity to help people affected by KAT6A to improve their level of autonomy and quality of life.

This study on personalized therapies has a cost of 21,000 euros per semester during the next 3 years, the families have already obtained help to pay the first semester, the covid19 has made it impossible to carry out solidarity campaigns and events to raise funds, so we ask for your collaboration to bet on the KAT6A project and bet on our children.
