THIS IS THE ONLY OFFICIAL FAMILY FUNDRAISER FOR SOPHIA MASON.
*We are thankful for an earlier GoFundMe set up by a family friend. Funds from that campaign will be transferred to the family, and all new donations should be directed to this site. Thank you!
Sophia (born January 1, 2014) was a bright, happy, and loving girl, whose life was tragically cut short as the result of the failure of social services systems that were designed to protect her. Despite living in difficult circumstances, whenever she was permitted to visit with family, she always had a smile on her face, a song to sing, and a dance to share. Although we who love her (and fought to gain guardianship of her) are heartbroken by the circumstances surrounding her death, we are comforted by the fact that Sophia is with God...and no longer suffering. We remain deeply grateful for your prayers & donations to help cover funeral costs and burial expenses for little Sophia, on behalf of Sylvia Johnson, Sophia's grandmother, who lovingly raised her until she was taken from the Hayward, CA area and senselessly murdered. When her body was discovered on March 11th in Merced, CA, our family was devastated. As her passing was completely unexpected, and many years too soon, the sudden financial burden of these final costs weigh heavily on those who loved her most.
Although we cannot make this right for Sophia, any remaining funds after burial costs have been met will be used to seek justice and hold those in the social services system accountable — so that this does not happen to another little girl or boy who needs help. We cannot afford to let CPS and law enforcement look the other way, when so many kids are falling in between the cracks. Ultimately, Sophia, our granddaughter, niece, and cousin, fell victim to one failure after another. Even when she cried out for help, social workers ignored her and placed her back into a dangerous situation with her primary caregiver.
This account is being responsibly managed by Sylvia's eldest niece, and finance professional, Melissa Harris.
