My heart is absolutely breaking to pieces. :( I have 2 Miniature Dachshunds. One is 3 month's old (Oakley) and One is almost a year and a half old (Ruby)! I love them both to bits... they are my heart.
However, yesterday, I was at the SPCA where I volunteer 4-5 days/week. I walked into one of the rooms to grab something and looked at our intake kennels and there was a Dachshund with the normal intake sign that lists the dogs info and it said that it was an owner surrender and there was also a yellow post-it note on there that said "paralyzed back legs"!!! I was like WTF?!!? I went tearing out of the room to the front desk and asked my "co-workers" (they're paid staff, I am only a volunteer) "What happened to the Dachshund in intake?!"
I was then told that her owner surrendered her because she became paralyzed 2 weeks ago and they can't afford to see what needs to be done to fix her or afford whatever that might be, and that she is peeing and pooping all over the house since she can't make it outside to go herself because she is now paralyzed and they didn't want their grandkids around it. So they brought her to the SPCA and surrendered her!!!!
I am SPITTING FIRE right now!!!! What the actual F#$%!!!!
So, long story short, this poor baby is paralyzed on her backside and her "family" decided she wasn't worth WHATEVER the cost might be to get her help so they dumped her. Can you imagine what she might be feeling right now?!!? Like... "What did I do wrong? Why did my family go away? Why am I in this cage?!"
Oh, and to make it worse... when I asked HOW she became paralyzed 2 weeks ago I was told that the family had a baby gate, one of those ones that also has a miniature door built into it for cats and small dogs to be able to still go through the gate and that she was trying to go through it and got stuck and someone didn't realize she was there and opened the MAIN big gate and crushed her!!!!
I am just in awe. Her intake kennel was covered in pee and poo as I guess the intake folks hadn't gotten to hers yet, but I always happily help out when I'm there with stuff like that so my daughter and I (she was there helping me today too) opened up the kennel and she was scared to death, of course. You know how Doxies shake when they are so scared. I'm sure she is so confused too.
Anyway, I got all the towels and bedding out and threw it all away and then went and got fresh everything out of our laundry area. Grabbed some gloves and sanitizer as well as doggie wipes. Went back in and my 14-year old daughter so gently and lovingly got her cleaned up with the wipes (her nametag on her collar says her name is "Jewel"). While my daughter was cleaning her I got on my hands and knees and scrubbed her kennel down and put in fresh comfy bedding/blankets and towels.
Before we put her back into the kennel we tried to see if she could move at all on her own and let me tell you she can GO! She was just moving and scootching herself right along. I couldn't believe it! I picked her up and looked at her backside which is very raw from I'm sure all the scootching on the floor as well as not being cared for by her previous owner when it came to cleaning her up when she pottied on herself unable to really get out of her own way like dogs who are not paralyzed are able to do.
I just feel like this poor baby has been so mistreated on top of the "accident". I feel like they not only abandoned her by bringing her to our shelter but also by not caring for her in the interim period after it happened.
I just want to scoop her up and bring her home with me. My husband who loves me and ALL of our animals (3 dogs, 2 cats, 2 guinea pigs, and a HUGE saltwater aquarium) is telling me that we just can't do it. And I get it... we have a zoo already, but I am just heartbroken.
I have asked the clinic there to let me know what the vet says about Jewel and her injuries. This COULD be something that is easily treatable/fixable with surgery! She is only 5 years old according to the intake sheet. She DESERVES to not be alone, not be abandoned, not be in a kennel, left behind because she can't walk anymore. :(
I know from personal experience that our shelter is sooooo good with animals and cares so much and deeply for them!! But I also know that the shelter cannot afford to pay for big surgeries and that if we can not find someone that will want to adopt her "as-is" that the shelter will seek to send her to a rescue facility, which would be better for her than having her paralyzed in a kennel in our shelter.
Our family used to foster animals from our shelter but when we got our latest Dachshund a couple of months ago I promised I wouldn't foster anymore because it is just too much work with the zoo we already have going on in our house.
HOWEVER, IF, and I say, IF, we can find someone that will definitely want to adopt her I think I can talk my husband into letting me foster her in the interim so she doesn't have to be in the kennel at our shelter. Right now at least she is intake where it is quiet. When/if she gets moved to strays/adoptables it will be ridiculously loud for her and she will be scared beyond imagination. I don't want her to go there, AT ALL.
Do you know someone who may want to come adopt her?! Do YOU want to come adopt her?! Again, we don't know yet what that all her medical needs might be, but hoping the Vet from the shelter has some insight for us very soon.
I have put together this go-fund-me to try and raise funds to get her whatever type of surgery the vet says that she might need. I just want to help her in any way that I can. I want to bring her home and like I said, I think I can talk my hubby into allowing the fostering of her if we can get her to a family that will love her FOREVER and her never have to go through anything like this again.
I can't believe people allow their dogs to get injured due to their OWN NEGLIGENCE and then dump them off when they don't want to deal with the consequences of their actions. I swear I am so glad I was not at the desk of the shelter when that person brought her in and surrendered her. I may have ended up in jail!!!
PLEASE, I am asking anyone and everyone for help and advice for her.
I just keep sitting here thinking that she is in one of our intake kennels alone, scared, paralyzed, and laying in her own pee or poo because she can't really go anywhere away from it because she is in a kennel. She can move herself, like I said, but she can only get so far away from it when she is in a kennel. I know that I will be there as soon as the doors open each morning for staff and volunteers so I can go take care of her again.
I took some pictures of her in the kennel after I put down fresh stuff for her and I also took some pictures of my daughter holding her after she had so kindly and lovingly cleaned her.
Regarding any donated funds, I will happily post updates from vets and pictures of payments receipts for her Veterinary care to show proof of what funds are used for. I only wish for her to get the help she needs! If a Veterinary determines her medical needs are less expensive than what this Go Fund Me amount is for I will go in and reduce the requested amount.
Thank you for caring for Jewel. She deserves to be healed and loved forever. ❤
