2020 has been a bad year. On May 27th, a very kind soul was senselessly murdered in a hail of gunfire. Owen Melin, 22 years is polite, quiet and nice to everyone. He did not deserve this in any way shape or form. He did not hang out with sketch elements. His professors at USFSP admired him along with all who were fortunate enough to know him. His father, Charles Melin, is struggling with this loss. And to add to the misery, this is not the first time he has lost a son.I and many others in the community have grown close to Charles' family, including One,, his wife Mary and middle son Jake.
Upon learning the news, the police press release contained spartan details of this. I am a man of modest means. The first thing I did was pledge $5,000 of my own money. I contacted the office of Mayor Rick Kriseman and offered the reward money, nearly depleting my savings in the process.
I literally tendered $5,000 in cash to the SPPD.
Since giving the SPPD the reward money, they have one person in custody. But there were others.
The purpose of this funding campaign is two-fold. The first is for some contribution for the $5,000 I have already paid. My thinking is that if I recover at least $4,000, any sum above that will be given to Charles' family to help defray the funeral and aftermath costs associated with this misery. Charles work including entertaining the community with performing music with his act, Cornbread Whiskey along with hosting the most welcoming open mic night at Brewers Tasting Room. In the early mornings and throughout the day, he is a tennis coach. He can do neither of these things now as he struggles with this. So to the extent this campaign exceeds above and beyond helping me with the reward bounty, I pledge to give 100% above that to his family.
Times are tough now with this economy and uncertainty. Anything you could contribute would help. And if you can't, I understand. But beyond all that, I appreciate your time and thoughts. Sometimes, thoughts and prayers are just not enough. Justice for Owen.
