Josie's Diabetic Alert Dog
Donation protected
This is Josie, and on July 15th, 2013 she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 4. That day her life forever changed.
Type 1 diabetes is an auto immune disease in which your pancreas stops working so therefor you do not produce insulin to break down the sugars in your blood. My new role as her mom was now to also become her pancreas.
Josie had to learn a new lifestyle; Checking her blood sugar 12 times a day, getting a shot EVERYTIME she needed to eat or drink, waking her up through the night to eat and or drink when her sugar was low., etc. In July of 2014 Josie was placed on an insulin pump to eliminate the multiple (8-12) shots a day. The pump would deliver her insluin and she would now get a "shot" once every 2 days instead of 1-12 times a day. The site would be inserted in Josie and the insluin delievered through tubing.
The normal cold or flu wreaks havic on a person with Type 1 diabetes, making their blood sugars go extremely high and requiring large amounts of insulin and following strict and specific "sick day" guidelines. Activity, such as jumping on a trampoline or playing ball can cause her to have low blood sugars, so we have to watch her extremely close during ANY and ALL activity.
We are managing diabetes and there is nothing nice about this disease! We have many "I hate diabetes" days. Sometimes I feel like again, she was robbed of being a care free little girl, but I'll do whatever I have to do to make sure that she alwasy has a smile on her face and realizes that she can conquer ANYTHING!
The worse part is that Josie does NOT know or recognize symptoms of having low or high blood sugar. We have to be in constant watch of her due to the fact that she doesnt recognize these symptoms. We have caught many of lows in the 30's and many of high's in the 300 and above. So, with that being said, we have decided to start our journey to get Josie a D.A.D(Diabetic Alert Dog). The D.A.D is trained to recognize (from Josie's scent) 45 minutes prior to Josie having a low or high sugar and will alert her to take action. We feel that by getting her a D.A.D dog that it will provide her with an extra pair of eyes and ears. The dog will accompany Josie EVERYWHERE she goes from bed to school and to any extra cirricular activities.
The facility we have chosen is in Anderson, South Carolina and is ran by a Type 1 Diabetic family. The dogs are trained in many areas from scent to obediance and more. We feel that this would be a wonderful companion for Josie.
We need the help of our friends and family and extended on to peole near and far to make this happen for Josie. Even if you can donate $5, we will be so very appreciativeof you helping make this happen for Josie. If I could write a check today I would, but reality, I can't, so here we are.
We thank you in advance and hope you will follow our journey <3
