MONTICELLO, Ark. -- Southeastern Oklahoma State University baseball player Joseph Cerda was out of surgery Monday morning after being hit by a car and seriously injured on Saturday evening.

Police are still searching for the driver of that vehicle.

Cerda, 21, was in Arkansas with his team for a three-game series against the University of Arkansas at Monticello. State police said Cerda and his teammates were crossing US 421 around 8 p.m. Saturday to visit a restaurant when the hit-and-run accident happened.

Witnesses told Arkansas State Police that a "dark color car" struck Cerda and drove away without stopping.

"Teammates told Arkansas State Troopers they saw Cerda attempt to jump away from the path of the car, but was struck," state police said in a written statement.

Cerda was treated at a hospital in Monticello and was later airlifted to the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences Hospital in Little Rock for further treatment, state police said. He underwent surgery on Monday.

Following Monday's surgery, Joseph remains in critical condition with a long road of recovery ahead.

Your gift will assist the Cerda family  to cover short term daily living and medical expenses.

Any gift would be greatly appreciated.

A message from Joseph Cerda's father:

‪It has been a tough weekend, but it would have been even tougher without the support of Savage Storm Baseball, St.Mary’s Softball, friends and family who came from all over and sent messages, and the countless prayers and visitors Joseph has received from the #GAC baseball and #FCA communities. Thank you from Joseph and the Cerda family. He has a long road ahead, your continued prayers are appreciated. #39STRONG‬
