On Sunday, May 15, 2016 at approximately 9:00 PM EST Jordan Sims was involved in a single car accident on Judge Brown Road in Valley, AL. While travelling east on the road Jordan lost control of his Mazda RX-8 going through a turn and drove directly into a tree. The impact caused extensive damage to the vehicle causing it to catch fire. Due to the damage Jordan was knocked unconscious and pinned in the vehicle. Local residents rushed to the scene to begin work on saving Jordan's life by putting out the flames with water hoses. As law enforcement, EMS, and the fire departments arrive they extinguished the flames to find Jordan inside still breathing. East Alabama and Huguley firemen then worked to cut him from the vehicle. He was then flighted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, GA.
Jordan arrived at Grady Memorial around 10:40 PM EST, where he spent approximately five hours in surgery to save his life. He was in the hands of one of the best surgeons Grady has to offer. His body received blunt trauma to his liver causing extensive damage. Both his legs and his left arm suffered from the fire. The damage to his right leg was far too great and the doctors had no choice but to amputate it above his knee. His left leg while it did have a great deal of burn was still showing a pulse to his foot. He suffered multiple fractures on his entire left leg as well as his right hip.
Around 5:00 AM Monday, Jordan was transferred to the Burn Center in Grady where he remained on life support and sedated. Jordan spent the day fighting to reach a stable condition which would allow for transport to a CAT scan. During this time he was visited by all of his friends and family who showered him with overwhelming love. At 12:01 AM EST, Tuesday, May 17, Jordan’s family members joined with the nurse on duty to sing for him wishing him a Happy 21st Birthday. He remained in a sedated stated and on life support. He spent the rest of the night being monitored for progress. As morning came he showed signs of improvement and decisions were made that he would be spending his birthday in surgery. Around 1:40 PM EST Jordan was transported to have a CAT scan and then sent to the OR for surgery.
Surgery for Jordan took up most of all of his day. The goals of the surgery were to work on his liver, his bones, and his burns. Work on his liver was completed and the skin of his stomach was closed more as it had been previously left open from the original surgery. He had several rods, pins, and braces placed on his hip and legs to secure his broken bones into their proper places. The surgeons began removing dead muscle tissue from his left leg. They then redressed his burns. After ten hours in surgery he was returned to the burn center to continue being under the care of his nurses. He did well in his surgery and things were looking good.
Now it was time for some bad news. Results from the CAT scan showed that Jordan had sustained two fractured vertebrae as well as fluid on his brain. His neck was fine remaining in the brace that he has been in for the extent of his stay. The fluid on the brain however could be causing excessive pressure and could result in brain damage. The neurological team came to review the CAT scan results and visit with Jordan. At midnight they stopped the usage of sedative medicine in attempt to begin to wake Jordan to check his brain activity. His mother spent a long night with negative results from neurology. Wednesday started out as a sad day as Jordan is now in a coma.
The plan for Wednesday was relieve the pressure from Jordan’s brain. However, to do that the neurology team would need to drill into Jordan’s skull to place a device that can measure the pressure. So while we waited Jordan continued to spend his day as he normally would in the burn center. He was monitored and they changed his dressings. At 1:30 PM EST the neurosurgeon visited with the family to explain the extent of the procedure for measuring the pressure on the brain and they then left to begin. At 2:00 PM EST family was called back to see Jordan. To their surprise neurology did not go ahead with the procedure. Jordan had in fact began showing response to stimulus during the dressing change of his burns. Relief and joy filled the waiting room. This was the best news all day. The fear of Jordan being brain dead had been lifted. The remainder of the day Jordan was visited with his friends and family and as the day progressed he began to move more and more and respond more and more. His mother spoke to him and he moved his head towards her. His sister spoke to him and he opened his eyes towards her direction. He is still in a coma but the hope that his condition with his brain is not severe is very high.
Jordan has come a long way in his recovery and will be facing many more hurdles along the way. We hope to continue to see the outpouring support for him that we have seen so far. He is scheduled for more surgery tomorrow, Thursday, this will be to remove more dead tissue/muscle from his burn areas. He is beginning to develop a fever and is being given antibiotics. This is expected.
As of right now it is 10:25 PM EST. I am concluding this initial post. I can't express how thankful I am for the love everyone has shown towards my brother and my family. And the amount of gratitude I have for every individual that has played a role in saving my brothers life continues to grow exponentially. Please continue to check back on this Public Group for updates as we bring Jordan back to health and back to being a normal part of our lives.
For the love of my brother and my best friend,
