John's Transition..to Senior Living

Anyone who has met my father, John A. Nesberg, will tell you he’s a bit different, but they’ll also tell you how much they adore him.
Ever since I was a kid I can remember my dad helping others without ever expecting anything in return.
Nice Nesberg was everyone’s favorite joke-telling, laid back, 6th grade teacher.  His students played chess, build toothpick bridges & won $2 bills for passing tests.
John has alwasy been eager to help friends, neighbors, even strangers.  A local hitch hiker's chauffeur.
He is proud to be quirky and different and likes to meet new and different people.  Since meeting Daniel he thinks differently about Mexico and would like to visit.
Still a great teacher for what he's passionate about.
Slowly he started to change. His letters had misspellings and missing words. He often forgot names of people and basic objects. He became more paranoid locking everything (mostly just keeping himself out of his car or apartment). Three summers ago he was diagnosed with Expressive Aphasia, a mild form of dementia. After a long, fun, intense road trip with my dad I knew I had to move home to help.
Soon I learned he was not safe during the day while I worked (he also has an incurable case of itchy heels, even in sub zero temps).
He needs 24/7 supervision. Using friend loans, pension, social security, pending VA assistance and part of my paychecks we managed the $4,300 monthly cost. He happily packed a bag to move. “Ladies here I come”.
While he enjoys the social interactions of Senior Living, he misses galavanting around the UP visiting friends. We get him out when we can to keep him active doing the things he loves....Shoveling the stairs & fixing the handrails at Presque IsleOur outtings are not enough. He has escaped several times. For his safety, he had to be moved to the Memory Care unit, which cost double, $9,000. Luckily this high cost situation is temporary. He is on the VA’s waiting list, waiting for Medicaid approval for Tender Care in Munising or myself as his caregiver when school is out if need be.  The $10,000 in loans and $14,000 we will fall short in Memory Care over the next few months is a load that is more than we can manage.
We are hoping that the kindness he has always shown others will now be shared in HIS time of need. If you've been positived influenced by his helping hands, encouraging words, sense of humor, random acts of kindness please consider contributing.
He still finds ways to connect and make new friends.
Tennis vs Ping Pong. Drive vs Walk. He's happilly adapting and still finding ways to be a positive impact on those around him, evermore optimistic, outgoing and helpful. Many thanks to all our friends and family for your emotional support through these hard times. We will forever remember and be debt for your patience, love and compassion.
