I have always thought that studying abroad would not be something I would have the opportunity to experience. I always knew that I would never be able to afford it, and I have always been quite afraid of being across the world from everyone I know and care about. This year, however, despite my fears, I decided I would take the leap.
My name is Joanna Ortiz. I am 21 years old, and am currently a third year Civil Engineering student at UC Davis. I went to high school at Roseland University Prep, a very small high school, which is known by many as the “fish factory” (because it used to be a fish factory). This school contains mainly all Hispanic students, with low income, immigrant parents. Despite these circumstances, most of us have proved statistics wrong. Before, many Hispanics were not graduating high school. Now, not only are we graduating high school, but, with the help of the most amazing and caring teachers, many of us are moving on to college.
Growing up, whenever I thought about what I wanted for my life, I always knew I wanted more. I have seen my parents work unbelievably hard. I see them getting more and more tired as the years go by, and I just want more for them, and more for myself. I want a successful career. I want to make my parents proud.
Now that I am college, I am constantly thinking about what my next step will be to achieve my goal of becoming a Civil Engineer. I’ve met so many talented future engineers here at UC Davis. Sometimes I question whether I can compete, whether I can succeed in this field. Many of the students I have met have such great educational, financial, and personal backgrounds. What can make me stand out?
Well, my next step is to study abroad. This is my opportunity to stand out. While in Rome, I will be learning engineering out in the world. I will get to experience historical structural analysis in many important places in Rome, such as the Coliseum, and the Pantheon. I will visit one of the greatest architectural places in the world. I will set myself apart from many.
I know that it seems I am asking for a great amount of money. I have applied to several scholarships, but even if I receive them all, I will still be thousands of dollars short.
In advanced, Id like to thank anyone who is even still reading this. I truly appreciate any donations and any support. Thank you for helping me achieve a goal I once thought was impossible. This means the world to me.
If you do donate, please don’t donate anonymously so I can send you many thank you and post cards. :)
