Jim Marlett’s Family Medical Fund

Dear Family, Friends and Colleagues of the Marlett's,

It's with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of our dad, friend to many and Honey Papa to one. Jim was a hell of a man, he was strong, loud,  often times stubborn, incredibly resilient and truly just down right wonderful human being. He never met a stranger and had a divine way of bringing a group together. For the last 20+ years he had served multiple communities across Texas, Florida and Georgia as a valiant leader.  You knew who he was because he stood tall at 6'5" ft. and always donned a cowboy hat, starched Wrangler jeans and cowboy boots. Even in the blistering Houston summer heat. He took great pride in his work as the "King of the campground" while managing RV resorts in the last few decades from Houston to Austin and New Caney. He made an impact in the lives he touched. What people knew about him was his willingness to go the extra distance to get the job done and done right. He selflessly spent every holiday cooking a large feast for the masses of friends he had made at the campgrounds who were usually in town seeking medical treatments and had to spend the holidays separated from their families. He was the friend who you called in the middle of the night because you needed help and he'd come every time.

In the last few weeks, Jim began to feel ill. Short of breathe, couldn't eat and couldn't sleep. Yet, he pressed on because he was the epitome of hard work and dedication. He put his health aside for as long as he could stand it and unfortunately he did that for too long. By the time he felt ready to step aside from his duties at work to have open heart surgery to replace a deteriorated pig valve that had been placed in his left aorta in 2016 he was met with significant challenges. On October 15th,  the day of the scheduled operation, we learned that he had multiple large blood clots that would make the surgery a fatal decision. We accepted that the doctors had a plan to thin his blood enough to clear up the clots so that we could proceed with his surgery.  The team explained to us that he went into cardiac arrest on the morning of October 16th and had received 46 mins of CPR followed by 2 shocks. The Ascension Seton Medical Center spent 15 long days working to get dad stabilized on as many as 11 life support machines at a time and were met with many challenges at every turn. On October 25th, we learned that dads organs had sustained significant trauma from the lengthy CPR. His organs one by one began to go into failure and the team at ASMC had placed dad on yet another lifesaving device, the last in their toolkit that he could be a candidate for. Each day he made small improvements that we're followed with larger regressions. On the evening of October 30th it was confirmed that dad began to go into septic shock. The professionals at Ascension Seton Medical Center did absolutely everything they could to save him, working tirelessly round the clock to restore him and we extend our most sincere gratitude to the staff for the care and commitment to our dad in his final weeks. On October 31st at 4:33 AM in the soft glow of the ICU room overhead light with his family at his side, dad took his final breath. And our lives forever won't be the same, we miss him immensely.

This fundraiser is set up  to help offset the cost of medical expenses for Jim. If you would like to assist with the financial burden, any donation through this gofundme will do directly towards those medical expenses accrued in his final weeks.

On behalf of the family: We appreciate the outpouring of love, prayers and support shown over the last few weeks and undoubtedly in the months to come. Thank you.
