Jerry's Journey

Jerry's Journey
It wasn't a car accident or cancer, but it was a brain injury. My brother-in-law Jerry is a master's prepared physical therapist. He was working his dream job. He and his wife Theresa worked for years to put Jerry through college as an adult. Jerry practiced for 9 years, but then everything changed; when he turned 50 he was diagnosed with a non cancerous brain tumor. The tumor was bigger than a golf ball, and it took a 12 hour surgery to remove it; we weren't even sure if he would survive. Along with the tumor, his ability to walk and life as he knew it were removed along with it.
Jerry spent 6 months in the hospital dealing with the many complications from the surgery. He has been through so much in the 6 years following; He still deals with many deficits. He is confined to a wheelchair due to his lost ability to balance; he is unable to transfer in and out of his wheelchair by himself, thus causing him to need help with all transfers. Aside from balance, Jerry has double vision. He has had eye surgery in an attempt to correct it, but must wear special prisms in his glasses to help his vision. In addition, he has speech and swallowing problems, making him choke when eating and speaking.
Jerry, Theresa and their son Joe are kind and loving people who deserve so much more than what they've been through. Their finanicial struggles are many; their car and old home are in need of countless repairs. Jerry was the sole provider for his family, and Theresa is unable to work as she needs to be with Jerry at all times to assist him. He has fallen many times due to his lack of balance.
I would absolutely love to see them get a new car; one easy for Theresa to help Jerry transfer in and out of, and also with good gas mileage and affordable to maintain. I needn't go into all the details of their financial burdens, but know this: they need help, and lots of it!
I personally had a son who went through cancer treatment for 3 years when he was 7 years old, so I know what it feels like to be jobless, in debt, and not knowing how to make ends meet; however, I also know what it's like to see family, friends, and the community come together to help.
