Hi Everyone;
My name is Pattie Hurd and this campaign is for my best friend, Jenni Johnson. We have been friends since 8th grade. Jenni and her family took me in as part of their family back when my family was having a difficult time. They included me in family vacations and treated me like one of their own. I will be forever grateful for the day I met Jenni.
It's now time to return the favor. It's with a heavy heart that I have to tell you that Jenni is very sick. Jenni is a single mom of two great kids; Brandon - 16 and Haley - 9.
She hadn't been feeling well this past year and attributed it to stress. About 5 months ago they told her that her iron was low. In August she went back for more blood work and was called right away and told to go to the nearest Emergency Room, her red cell blood count was at life threatening levels.
Here we are two months later, in and out of the hospital, weekly blood and platelet infusions and still no answers. Jenni's' mom, Shirley Decaen, got tired of waiting for a referral to UCSF and Jenni was just getting sicker and sicker but they couldn't get her into see the Hemotoligist until October 28th. She took Jenni to the UCSF ER early last week and demanded she be seen.
Jenni was admitted into UCSF and needed immediate infusions. She was disoriented, in extreme pain and short of breath due to her low blood and platelet counts.
After a third bone marrow test last Thursday, she still does not have a definitive diagnosis but it's definitely a blood disorder - either Aplastic Anemia or MDS (Myelodysplasia) which is a precursor to Leukemia. They are still awaiting results of some pretty extensive testing but in the meantime, Jenni is getting sicker and they need to start some sort of treatment. Aplastic Anemia and MDS require different treatments but both could result in a stem cell transplant being required for her at some point as well as rounds of chemo and radiation.
Jenni is not going to be able to work for quite some time (or if ever) and will require multiple hospital stays, expensive treatments and medications. While she has some insurance it will not cover everything.
Our plan is to collect money for Jenni to help pay for her medical and treatment needs as well as take care of her kids during this time. We will be applying for disability for Jenni and we all know how slow that process is. In the meantime, we'd like to raise money to help cover most of her expenses for the next 18-24 months.
Jenni is determined to fight this but as any single mom, she is scared and worries about her kids and not being able to provide for them.
This will be an on-going campaign to continue to help Jenni, Brandon and Haley. Donations of any and all sizes are greatly appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to read about my best friend and I hope you're able to help her out. She means the world to me and it's heartbreaking to watch her go through this.
With Much Love,
Pattie and Jenni's Entire Family
