Jemma's Leg

Donation protected
This is an appeal to help a colleague of ours.  Jemma is a bubbly 30 year old, a keen sports woman who has been really unlucky with 3 years of medical work that has left her in constant pain, and unable to come back to work.

In order to speed her recovery, we, her collegues in the Human Factors group at  NATS are looking to raise £20,000 as quickly as we can to allow her to undertake private surgery.  In order to do this we have offered to complete a series of sponsored events to assist in raising the total.

A potted history:

In April 2013 Jemma had surgery on her right hip in an attempt to fix the symptoms of pain that she had been in for some time caused by a long term misalignment of the bones in her my right leg. The procedure consisted of an invasive investigation of the hip joint, and breaking the thigh bone to rotate it into a better position.

Unfortunately, there were complications during the surgery and her hip was broken and foot crushed, turning what should have been a 4 hour surgery into a 9 and a half hour surgery, ending up in intensive care the following day suffering from metabolic acidosis.

She was left with a lot of metal in her hip in an attempt to reconstruct it, a massive scar and a very swollen, sore and wonky foot

Since then, Jemma has had 3 further sessions of surgery, each one breaking bones and re aligning leg, ankle or toes.  In the summer of 2015, it was decided that the metal work in Jemma’s’ hip would need to be removed so that exploratory CT and MRI scans could be conducted to address the constant pain that Jemma had been suffering since the first operation.Unfortunately, the results from the scans couldn’t have been much worse, the complications from the original surgery had not only left her hip twisted, it had also caused the blood supply to her thigh bone to be damaged, meaning that the head of her femur had been getting an insufficient blood supply for the last 2 and a half years. This had resulted in a condition where the bone has died, which had already progressed past treatment.

Her work is based on the improvement of human performance within the safety industry and is based on a sports science degree, and experience through the Scottish institute for sport, UK Government and education. So, as you can appreciate, a 3 year layup from meaningful exercise is really hard.

Part of the frustration is that each procedure is a separate transaction, which means that waiting between each one takes months, which in turn exacerbates the problem.  We’d like to see her back at work, so are looking for assistance, and sponsorship, in order to make that happen as soon as possible.

She is writing a blog that can be accessed at:
