Jasmine Stringer - August 6, 1960 - September 27, 2019
The angels came to take our dear Jasmine on September 27, 2019 after her courageous battle with breast cancer. To honour Jasmine's legacy we are restarting this fundraising campaign to build a trust fund for her 2 children, Jade and Skyler. The funds will be used to support them with their education, future travel or other special events that come up as they move forward without their mother.
Update - We are overwhelmed by the generous financial support from friends, family and the community surrounding Jasmine. It has been a great relief to Jasmine knowing that money is one less thing to worry about at the moment. She has had some good news, as these things go, in that after her first chemo blast she has since been receiving a new targeted chemo treatment that has shown more effective results for breast cancer. We're more optimistic about the future.
As per the GoFundMe guidelines, we now need to start withdrawing some of the funds collected. This would have been done earlier, except a wonderful angel came along, outside of this campaign, and has covered many expenses since Jasmine stopped working at the end of January. Jasmine also did apply and has now started to receive income assistance, which is helpful, but the amount she receives does not even cover her rent, let alone other daily life expenses. The plan is for Ross and I to withdraw and hold the funds then distribute them to Jasmine as needed in the coming months. The amount raised will cover about 6 months rent, which allows Jasmine that time for further healing a gradual return to work and hopefully a new normal by the fall. She has one more chemo treatment in April which will then be followed by an assessment. It is expected that she will continue to receive an inter venous drug treatment on a regular schedule for the rest of her life. If you have any questions or concerns about these funds, please reach out to Ross or Kari, or if you're more comfortable, feel free to speak with Jasmine.
Thank you again for your generous support.
A vibrant go-getter with an independent spirit, Jasmine has touched the lives of many and now needs our community’s support as she faces the biggest challenge of her life.
In January 2019, my close friend of 30 years was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer that has metastasized to her liver. She’s now undergoing intensive chemotherapy treatments for the next several weeks, and at the urging of a close circle of friends will stop work so that she may focus her energy on healing and reducing stress in her life. A single mother to Jade, 18, and Skyler, 15, Jasmine has always found a way to support herself and her family, and provide them with a loving and stable home, sometimes by working a second job or hosting international students.
I met Jasmine in 1986 during our first days together at the Ryerson School of Fashion. From Quebec, and the second of four children, she was fun-loving and adventurous. In 1990, she drove across the country and settled in Kitsilano, then eventually on the North Shore, where she raised her children. Her career has been varied and her natural artistic talents allowed her to prosper as a graphic designer and art director, later as an instructor in graphic design and art direction. Lately she has found rewarding work on-call with a local school district as an education assistant, helping children with disabilities manage in the classroom, a job that is close to her heart since son Skyler was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy at the age of four. For the past two decades, as a yoga teacher, she’s helped hundreds with their emotional, mental and physical well-being. She’s now focusing on her own healing journey.
Breast cancer first struck Jasmine in 2010, leading to two surgeries and radiation. The cancer returned in 2013, resulting in a double mastectomy. Her healing was speeded by her positivity and determination, the support of family and friends, the amazing love of her two young children, and her recovery came with remarkably little time away from work. More help will be needed now. Jasmine’s father passed away in 2012 and her mother, now in her 80s, supports her from afar with her deep faith, but is managing her own battle with leukemia and unable to travel to Vancouver for Jasmine’s care. Her siblings live in Quebec and will be coming to visit her as their schedules allow.
Jasmine is hopeful she’ll receive some social assistance as a person with a disability, but has no employee benefits or income assistance, and so this GoFundMe campaign is a vital part of Jasmine’s safety net to help cover daily living expenses as well as medication, treatments and other support not covered by social assistance. Your positive thoughts and prayers are appreciated, and if you have the capacity to give, any dollars that you contribute will be used to support Jasmine and her children as she continues on this journey. Our goal is to support Jasmine as long as needed, while her medical team work to bring her illness to a manageable condition, so that we may see her back in the yoga studio where she may continue to bring us tranquility during our practice.
