Greetings,
My name is Derek Fisher and I am currently a Senior at San Jose State University majoring in Business Management. Through SJSU, I have been given the opportunity to study abroad in Japan. I am scheduled to go abroad for 25 days from June 15th to July 9th of this year. This 3 unit course focuses on Japanese business, language, culture, and history.
Throughout my life, I have always wanted to learn more about Japanese culture. My grandmother is Japanese and I've never had the opportunity to truly get to build a relationship with her or that side of my family. This has fueled the curiosity for me my whole life. I always dreamt of learning about my heritage. This opportunity will do just that by allowing me to learn from a first-hand perspective rather than reading about it, which will help me grow as a person and appreciate who I am.
Being a Business Management major, my ultimate goal in life is to have the ability to work for myself. I find myself using my innovative mind every day trying to think of possible life-changing business ideas. I have a passion for helping others and hope to, someday, create a company with a mission centered around helping others grow individually and together. This trip to Japan will also allow me to gain more knowledge about business on an international level by giving me a global perspective.
While abroad, I will spend my days in Japan in 5 different cities: Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Hiroshima, and Tokyo. The total cost to San Jose State University for this course is $5,315 and is DUE ON APRIL 6TH. This amount covers tuition fees, lodging, flight to and from Japan, class materials and class related tours. I was a bit reluctant to create this funding page because I never really liked to ask for things/favors from others, including my parents; even though they have done a great deal for me throughout my life and would give me the world if they could.
I am currently looking to raise a little more than half the full amount due to my school. I will try to use money from a student loan and also money that I have saved up from my part-time job. Any donation amount helps and will make my life-long dream a reality. If you are unable to donate, it is okay! I only ask that you please share this page with your friends and family. Even a simple prayer for me and/or well wishes will make this all worth it.
No matter the amount of your support, I am extremely appreciative. Anything helps and I am grateful that you even took the time to read this. Thank you in advance. I'll be sure to share my experience of Japan by taking a ton of pictures and videos. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
