Hi, I’m Jake, and I’m hiking the same route where I had my accident to raise money for the brave volunteers at Glossop Mountain Rescue who saved my life.
On Sunday, January 28th, 2024, I was out scrambling in the Peak District with a couple of friends. We had ascended Wild Boar Clough and were descending Torside Clough when disaster struck. I lost my footing and fell 30 feet off a cliff, landing face down in a ravine. The fall left me with serious injuries: a broken left femur and a broken right acetabulum. Trapped in a steep, dangerous gully and unable to move, my friends acted quickly—getting me out of the water before rushing off to find a signal and call for help.
That’s when the incredible Glossop and Kinder Mountain Rescue Teams sprang into action. Despite the difficult terrain and challenging conditions, the teams worked together flawlessly to reach me, assess my injuries, and provide critical pain relief. Given the severity of the situation, both Kinder Mountain Rescue and the S92 Coastguard were called to assist with the evacuation.
A total of 42 volunteers—21 from GMRT and 21 from KMRT—worked tirelessly for over 6.5 hours, battling tough terrain to ensure I was safely airlifted to a helicopter for onward hospital treatment at Northern General Hospital. These selfless volunteers dedicated their time, expertise, and effort, finally standing down at 01:30am, knowing that their work had saved a life.
These heroes don’t do it for recognition—they do it because they care. They risk their lives every day to help others in dangerous situations, and that’s why I’m fundraising for them. Every penny raised will go directly to the Glossop Mountain Rescue Teams to support their ongoing work, providing much-needed funding for equipment, training, and operational needs.
