Marking the 15th anniversary of two iconic Black British brands, Breakin’ Convention and Jazz re:freshed are collaborating to demonstrate the magic that can happen when combining our live Jazz music and hip-hop dance art forms. And also to celebrate and shout to the world ‘we made it to 15!!’
We have almost achieved our financial target, but the one element we need help from our friends, supporters and family is in raising £4,000 so that we can create a live recording of this amazing moment in time.
For the second half of this year’s Breakin Convention festival shows on 5th, 6th & 7th May at Sadler’s Wells, Jazz re:freshed and prolific musician, composer, arranger and producer Jason Yarde have put together a dope 15 piece ensemble - Jazz re:freshed Sonic Orchestra - comprising of:
Saxophone/Composer/Band Leader: Jason Yarde
Drums: Saleem Raman
Percussion/vibes/marimba: Orphy Robinson
Double & Electric Bass: Inga Eichler
Guitar: Shirley Tetteh
Keyboards: Dominic Canning
Trombone: Nathaniel Cross
Trombone: Rosie Turton
Saxophone/Flute: Wayne Francis
Saxophone/Bass Clarinet: Nubya Garcia
Trumpet : Sheila Maurice-Grey
Trumpet: Jay Phelps
Voice/Cello: Ayanna Witter-Johnson
Turntablist: DJ Pogo
Beatboxer: Beatbox Hobbit
This line-up will perform new pieces composed by Jason Yarde as part of this stage show with:
Boy Blue Entertainment (London)
Lockers: The Locksmiths (London)
B-boys: The Ruggeds (Netherlands)
Freestyle: Mufasa (France)
We aim to create a record of the best bits of the three nights in order to makeit available for the general public, but just as importantly to ensure that we have documented such a special ensemble pushing the boundaries and even inspiring future generations of artists.
Our deadline to raise the funds is a short one - we have until 27th April to hit our £4000 target and know that we can put everything in place in time for the show.
As it is both companies 15th year, we have created 15 reward levels to offer in exchange for your support. Along with CD & Vinyl of the Jazz re:freshed Sonic Orchestra (JRFSO) performance, we have tickets to Breakin’ Convention, a unique one to one masterclass with Jonzi D himself, a private Sax lesson with prolific musician Shabaka Hutchings, a special living room concert from Ayanna Witter-Johnson, signed test presses from Nubya Garcia to name a few. Check them out, or you can simply donate without a reward.
This is our first time crowdfunding and we hope you will all show us some love. We appreciate anything you can contribute no matter how small to help us record this special anniversary event.
Jazz re:freshed is a not for profit organisation striving to raise the profile of and demonstrate the breadth of expression within UK Jazz. We support emerging and established artists and endeavour to communicate various aspects of the culture associated to the music and challenge the elitism and prejudice that has kept jazz on the sidelines far too long. With increased pressure on public funding, philanthropic support is becoming ever more vital to ensure we can continue to provide fair pay opportunities for artists while keeping events affordable to all. We appreciate any support you can offer to help us make this work.
