On Wednesday, after two years of being ignored and dismissed, someone finally listened. Dr. Riew performed a complex, 10-hour revisional spine surgery to repair the damage caused by the first operation. Jack had been walking around with a broken neck, loose screws, and failed hardware in his cervical spine — injuries that were slowly killing him.

Two years after a cervical spine surgery that was supposed to help, my fiancé, Jack, is now living with severe spinal cord damage. What was meant to be a fix has become a daily battle with pain, seizures, trouble breathing, loss of feeling in his arms and hands, and difficulty walking.

In May, we learned the surgeon hadn’t been honest about the failed surgery — and despite our pleas for help, Jack was left to suffer as he slowly becomes paralyzed.
