My name is Jean-Marie Lawrence. I am 28-years old, and I used a power wheelchair full time due to Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy. I have spent over half my life in a wheelchair, but I don't care about that. I love my life just the way it is, and believe God made me exactly as I was supposed to be. I wouldn't want it any other way. But that doesn't mean this life hasn't come with its fair share of struggles. One of the biggest struggles for me has been transportation.
In high school, I never took driver's ed with my peers because no one around me knew about the advancements in driving technology for people in wheelchairs. In college, when I learned all that technology existed, I didn't get my permit because I had no money for an adaptive vehicle with hand controls. Most often, these vehicles run upwards of $15,000. I just couldn't afford that. So, I've been using public transportation and paratransit to get around town, and to and from work. But public transportation doesn't allow for travel outside my city limits, making doctor's appointments and other travel difficult. This past March, on my sister's 15th birthday, I resolved to take the written driver's test (I couldn't let my younger sister have her permit before me!). I passed with flying colors! But I still had one pretty significant problem: no van that I could drive myself.
Today, God has answered part of that prayer. Today, I was offered a 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan with Braun Entervan conversion and hand controls! The owner is only asking $1,500. While this is no where in my budget, I know God sent me this opportunity. All I need to do is raise the cost of the van, plus transportation costs to ship it from Washington DC to me in Chattanooga, TN.
I am trying to raise $2,100, which will cover the total cost. I know a lot of people are trying to raise money for things right now, but please consider donating to me. Every bit will help.
Thank you!
