Memorial Garden space for Long Academy
Donation protected
The Long Academy community recently lost one of its students, Brian Angel, under tragic circumstances. We choose to be "Long Strong" and transform an underused space into a vibrant memorial Angel Garden where community members can come together and celebrate the lives of friends who have gone, and work through the healing process while growing fresh fruits and vegetables..
The space for our Angel Garden is next to our cafeteria, and is currently an ugly and utilitarian space. But with work from our students, teachers, families, and community members, we aim to make this 50ft x 30ft area a welcoming outdoor classroom and natural area. Donations will provide 16 raised beds for vegetables, six large pots for a fruit tree orchard plus bamboo screen walls, a pollinators garden for butterflies and bees, an aquaponics tank for raising fish and exploring nutrient flow, and a decorative wall for xeriscaping with succulents. A sink, garden benches and a fountain help to make this space special and an irrigation system and shade sail will help protect tender crops from Houston heat. Lastly, we'll use donations so that any student who volunteers time at our Angel Garden will get seeds and pots of their own, to spread the love and healing, and give kids something they can practice caring for, grow, and eat at home.
Long Academy is an urban 6-12 school located in the southwest side of Houston, with 97% Title I free lunch eligibility. Many of our students are recent immigrants from all over the world, including refugees from African and Middle Eastern countries. Despite socioeconomic challenges, our students are dual-enrolled in Houston Community College and graduate with an Associate's degree in pharmacy technology and allied health. Our graduates earn millions of dollars in scholarships annually.
Thank you for helping us turn a tragedy into an opportunity to strengthen our community, and turn an unused space into a vibrant place for healing, learning, and exploring.

Here is the unused, ugly space we intend to transform into our memorial Angel Garden. The space is adjacent to our cafeteria, which should provide a beautiful natural area and reminder to our community of where our food comes from. We have photoshopped an "after" picture which represents what we hope our hard work will look like when we're done!!
Scale layout of the future Angel Garden showing 16 raised beds, and areas for fruit trees, a butterfly garden, and aquaponics tank.

East wall currently and east wall photoshopped to represent how we hope it will look when done!

South wall before, and how we dream it will look:
