Jhamtse Gatsal Children's Community is a school, community, and home for over ninty children located in the district of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, India. The mission of the school is to provide a loving home, a supportive community, and an exceptional education to the most at-risk children from the impoverished surrounding villages. Jhamtse Gatsal was established in 2006 by Lobsang Phuntsok, a Buddhist monk born in the Tawang district, who believed the principles of love, compassion, and wisdom would allow these disadvantaged children to thrive. Jhamtse Gatsal has seen amazing success since its creation. The students are continuely the most successful in the region, they aspire to become doctors, military officers, and social workers, and they are committed to helping others in their community become successful. On top of all of this, they are some of the happiest and most well-adjusted children you could ever meet.
Currently, the oldest children at the school are in 10th grade. However, in order to expand the school's curriculum to include 11th and 12th grade, five additional teaching staff must be taken on. The salary for a Jhamtse Gatsal teacher is only $5,000 a year, so $25,000 is needed to expand the curriculum. The alternative is the older students will have to travel several hours each day to the local public school which provides a poor education by comparison and would take the students out of their community for the majority of the weekdays. Please help continue the great work of the Jhamtse Gatsal Children's Community and give these children the oppurtunity to succeed.
