Personal essay for the ACLU
This Winter, I applied to the ACLU Summer Institute at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. I'm a sophomore in high school and I see the defense of civil/human rights as something that is vital to the welfare of our society. When I found out that there was an opportunity for me to go to the capitol and learn the tools to advance my passion into real change, I filled out my application immediately.
A few weeks ago, I was accepted into the program, but was also confronted with the fact that it will cost a total of $3,500. If I reach my goal, I will be learning from some of the most qualified teachers at the ACLU, lawyers and activists who are fighting for these rights as we speak, and other like-minded peers. Not only that, but I will also get to participate in skill-building and enriching workshops and discussions, and will return with the eye-opening new knowledge brought only with the experience of traveling on my own for the first time! This is my opportunity to learn how to wield the values I hold so dear into an effective means of defending the people.
Together, I know we can find the resources to get me to D.C., and when I do get there, know that I will be preparing myself to continue the fight for a fair and just future!
