Help Make III - A Psychological Found Footage Thriller

Hi, I'm Dexter.

I’ve always been drawn to folk horror. The way it roots itself in landscape, isolation, and the sense that ancient, forgotten forces are at play. Films like The Wicker Man and Midsommar tap into something primal and unsettling, something we crave as our reality becomes increasingly detached from mystery. Simultaneously, I’ve loved the raw immediacy of found footage. There’s something deeply immersive about blurring the line between reality and fiction, pulling the audience directly into the narrative. Yet found footage has largely been relegated to cheap jump-scare films, underutilizing its potential as a tool for psychological exploration.

My new film, III, blends these two approaches. By combining folk horror’s atmospheric dread with found footage’s immersive realism, I’m creating something that feels both fresh and grounded. This isn’t another jump-scare film: it’s a character-driven psychological exploration that grounds the supernatural in immediacy and reality, while allowing folk horror themes to probe obsession, madness, and how belief shapes our reality. A meta-narrative element draws from creators like Charlie Kaufman and Stephen King, who place versions of themselves within their work, challenging the boundaries between art and artist. By positioning myself as a character within this film, I blur the line between reality and fiction, making the creative process itself the central, unsettling theme.

As such, III follows a fictionalized version of myself: a filmmaker with grand ambitions but a history of incomplete projects and mental health struggles. He assembles a documentary crew to film the behind-the-scenes process of his long-gestating debut feature, Viral—a found footage horror film about a haunted couple desperate for fame. What begins as a lighthearted, creative venture between friends quickly spirals into a nightmare as unexplainable events begin occurring on the set, challenging modern ideas of what is real and what we are capable of summoning through belief and intention. By the time Dexter realizes that his film might have somehow crossed the boundary into a real-life ritual, it’s too late to stop. His descent into obsession becomes the focal point of the documentary, while the audience is left to question the nature of creativity, the role of magic in the modern world, and whether the horror unfolding is a product of Dexter’s ambition or something much older and darker.

This is a homegrown, self-made and self funded project featuring Black Hills based performers, locations, and story, and today I'm inviting you to join us on this creative journey. Your support will help cover props, special effects, post-production (sound and color grading), equipment rental, and unforeseen expenses. Every contribution, no matter the size, makes you part of this project. Thank you for helping bring independent horror to life in the Black Hills.
