Two years ago I was diagnosed with COPD, asthma, and allergies and I've deteriorated quickly. COPD is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. I want to live as long as I can. For my family. My diagnosis was a surprise because I'm young (for this disease, anyway) and have never smoked.
Two years ago I was a top employee at a job I loved, a den leader for my son's Cub Scout pack, and was pretty active in a living history group where I taught and learned and made things--really cool things. Now having a lung disease means my life revolves around my ability to breathe and the effects the lung disease has on my body and mental health and I am not any of those things I used to be.
Two years ago I sang and danced and traveled. Now I have to use a walker for short distances, a wheelchair for longer, and I can't drive. Now I can't work more than a few hours a week and even that much can make me ill. Now I can't have a good conversation without struggling for breath. Now my husband can't even hold me because the weight of his arms hurt my chest and I can't breathe.
My medical costs have skyrocketed while my income has plummeted to just enough to pay my health insurance each month. After losing most of my work my family is really struggling financially. Specialists and Doctors and ERs and Urgent Cares and Pharmacies all want their money, of course, and I want to live in my house instead of in the street, and eat food for as long as I can. Our household income is less than half of what it was and paying for food, a home, a vehicle, etc. has become difficult.
I have been referred to a pulmonary rehabilitation program. It will be several appointments a week for 4 to 6 weeks, but it's 80 miles away so just getting there will be very expensive, because the price of gas is so high. My regular medications, even with insurance, are a couple hundred dollars a month. And don't get me started on doctor and specialist co-pays. It has become a small mountain of bills.
I was urged to start a fundraiser by a compassionate friend who saw my struggle and after careful thought I agreed. I realized that while it's hard to ask for help there comes a point where it's harder not to. So here we are. While I won't ever get better, these donations will help me stay the healthiest I can and literally live much longer. And for that, I and my family would be thankful. We are grateful for any and every amount and if you can't donate dollars, prayers and good energy and thoughts are also welcome.
UPDATE: November, 2014. So many people have offered their help and their good thoughts that I am overwhelmed with gratefulness. I realize I am blessed in my life, no matter what. I expect my time of need to be finite, as my appeal for disability moves through the process. And again, thank you!
