PURPOSE

The purpose of this Fundraiser is to meet the deadline to pay for my first academic year as a freshman at The American University of Rome. Classes will begin on January 30, 2023. My application to the University has been approved. I have enrolled as a full-time student and given a partial scholarship by the school, which will cover one-third of my tuition for each of the four years as I work toward a Bachelor’s Degree.

GOAL

My goal is to raise 14,000 dollars or euros, which, together with the scholarship the school has awarded me, will cover the entire tuition for 2023. Once I have begun classes and entered the academic world's rhythm, I intend to apply for scholarship opportunities available to students based on merit and course of study that will help pay the tuition for the rest of my years at school.

WHY ROME?

Both my maternal and paternal grandparents emigrated from the south of Italy to the United States in the early 19th century going through Ellis Island as was the way back in the day. I am excited to have the opportunity to get an American-accredited college education and, at the same time, develop a more profound knowledge of my ancestral culture.

ABOUT ME

My name is Ann Louise Amendolagine. I was born in Brooklyn, NY January 7, 1954.

I received a Catholic School education. At age 16, I traveled west across the United States, and when I returned to New York, rather than begin my fourth year of high school, I enrolled in night school to obtain the credits I needed for a High School Diploma. I got an apartment and supported myself over the next few years, working as a salesperson, receptionist, waitress, and even as a taxi driver.

I didn’t have a clear idea of what to do with my life until 1974, when at age 20, I discovered dance, and it became my immediate passion. After my first performance in front of a live audience, I felt I had found my true self, my purest self, and the applause and cheers from my fellow dancers and the public informed me that there was still another Ann inside me untapped, to be nurtured and given life. I decided to take as many classes as I could and studied classical ballet, jazz dance, tap dance, mime, voice, and acting with the best teachers New York City offered. I was given performance opportunities and signed my first contract as a dancer in 1980.

Since then, I have worked professionally as a dancer, singer, actress, dance teacher, and choreographer in the United States and Italy, as well as in the Caribbean, South America, Tokyo, London, Paris, and Alexandria, Egypt. Throughout my life, I have never stopped studying to improve my abilities as a performing artist.

In 1998 I began experimenting with song and dance as a street performer, a ‘Busker’ or ‘Artista Di Strada,’ as street performers are called in Italian, entertaining tourists and locals in Rome’s beautiful ‘piazze’ most notably in Piazza Navona. This activity, plus tap dance teaching and the occasional opportunity to work as an actress in projects filmed in Rome, have been the means by which I have supported myself.

With all the ups and downs of life as a performing artist and the constant training required to maintain a career, I never had the means, opportunity or time to pursue a college education. However, I have always longed to do so.

WHY NOW

After over forty years as a performer and the last twenty as a Busker, I have often wondered what I might do that would be meaningful in the next chapter of my life. I have spent over 40 years offering heart and soul to the public in performance and to my students through teaching, and I loved every minute of it. But these last years as a street performer singing and dancing for tips ‘a Cappello' on the street have been hard on my body. Last December, I underwent a successful hip replacement; in 2015, I had to have first one and then the other foot operated on for the damage done to my metatarsals by my dancing. In 2017, I slipped and fell in my tap shoes and broke my wrist and remained with my arm in a cast for three months.

Worrying about the future and wondering what I can do next that would be meaningful to support myself, I admit to having felt depressed and overwhelmed, sometimes just getting through the day by caring for my dog and maintaining contact with my relatives.

WHAT HAPPENED

I came upon my decision to apply to university in an unusual way. In the summer of 2021, I applied for an Italian Driver’s license. Although I have driven for 50 years, I was required to take the written exam in Italian consisting of 7000 possible questions to study and a road test using a stick shift. That was challenging for me as I had always driven an automatic shift. At first studying was a struggle, but at one point, I realized that although it had been 45 years since I had taken any test, I nevertheless was able to study, learn, and memorize new information! I passed both tests and got my Italian Driver’s License!

I thought: if I can do this, why not give myself the chance to undertake a new and exciting pursuit, that of a college education, a degree and with it new career opportunities?

Perhaps it was time to approach the academic world as a way to embrace life and open myself to the future.

CONCLUSION

I believe that attending university and obtaining a degree is the best step I can take to learn new skills that will enable me to navigate the modern world and be a valuable part of the future. The Major areas of study I am interested in are film production, digital media and communication, and journalism. The American University of Rome offers a Bachelor’s Degree in all these. After my first year, I can choose the best one that will enable me to contribute significantly to society as an artist.

Any one of these fields will provide me with the tools to enter the workforce in a new way, knowing that there may come a time when I can no longer withstand a street performer's rigorous and perilous life and the physical toll it takes on my body.

LO SCOPO

Lo scopo di questa raccolta fondi è riuscire a pagare in tempo la quota annuale di 14.000€, dovuta per il mio primo anno accademico all'American University of Rome. Le classi inizieranno il 18 gennaio 2023. La mia domanda all'Università è stata approvata; mi sono iscritta come studentessa a tempo pieno e mi è stata assegnata una borsa di studio parziale dalla scuola, che coprirà un terzo della mia retta per ciascuno dei 4 anni di studio necessari ad ottenere una laurea.

Una volta che avrò iniziato le lezioni, sarà possibile fare domanda per le numerose borse di studio a disposizione per gli studenti in base al merito e al percorso di studio.

CHI SONO

Mi chiamo Ann Louise Amendolagine. Sono nata a Brooklyn, NY, il 7 gennaio 1954. Sia i miei nonni materni che quelli paterni emigrarono dal sud Italia negli Stati Uniti all'inizio del XIX secolo passando per Ellis Island come si usava allora.

Ho frequentato la scuola cattolica, ma all'età di 16 anni ho deciso di andare via di casa e viaggiare verso ovest attraversando gli Stati Uniti. Poi sono tornata a New York e mi sono iscritta alla scuola serale per ottenere i crediti necessari a ricevere un diploma di scuola superiore. Ho preso un appartamento e mi sono mantenuta negli anni successivi lavorando come commessa, receptionist, cameriera e sono stata persino tassista!

Non avevo le idee chiare su cosa fare della mia vita fino al 1974, quando a 20 anni ho scoperto la danza che è diventata la mia passione. Dopo la mia prima esibizione davanti ad un pubblico, ho sentito di aver trovato il mio vero io, il mio io più puro, e gli applausi dei miei colleghi ballerini e del pubblico mi hanno informato che c'era un'altra Ann Louise dentro di me ancora non scoperta, da nutrire e dare vita.

Ho studiato danza classica, danza jazz, tip tap, mimo, canto e recitazione con i migliori insegnanti presenti a New York City. Mi sono state offerte opportunità di esibirmi e ho firmato il mio primo contratto come ballerina nel 1980. Da allora ho sempre lavorato professionalmente come ballerina, cantante e attrice, e anche come insegnante di danza e coreografa.

Nel 1998 ho iniziato a praticare a Roma con il canto e la danza come artista di strada, un "Busker" o "Street Performer” come gli artisti di strada vengono chiamati in inglese. Intrattenevo turisti e residenti nelle bellissime "piazze" di Roma, in particolare in Piazza Navona. Questa attività, insieme all'insegnamento del tip tap e quella occasionale di attrice in progetti cinematografici girati a Roma, sono stati i mezzi con cui mi sono mantenuta.

Con tutti gli alti e bassi della vita di un artista dello spettacolo e la formazione costante richiesta per mantenere una carriera, non ho mai avuto i mezzi, l'opportunità o il tempo per perseguire un'istruzione universitaria, anche se ho sempre desiderato farlo.

PERCHÉ ORA

All'età di 68 anni, questi ultimi anni da artista di strada cantando e ballando per le mance "a Cappello" per strada sono stati duri per il mio corpo. Lo scorso dicembre ho subito l’intervento di protesi d'anca con successo; nel 2015 ho dovuto operarmi prima un piede poi l'altro per i danni causati dalla danza ai metatarsi. Nel 2017, sono scivolata e sono caduta con le mie scarpe da tip tap e mi sono rotta il polso e sono rimasta con il braccio ingessato per 3 mesi.

Negli ultimi anni mi sono preoccupata pensando a cosa potrei fare per sostenermi nel prossimo capitolo della mia vita. Ho sofferto di depressione e mi sono sentita sopraffatta. Spesso non sapevo come affrontare la giornata, le riuscivo solo a prendermi cura del mio cane e a mantenere i contatti con i miei parenti. Ho continuato ad esibirmi per strada nonostante tutto.

COSA È SUCCESSO

Ho preso la mia decisione di iscrivermi all'università in un modo inaspettato.

Nell'estate del 2021 ho deciso di prendere la patente di guida italiana. Nonostante io guidi da 50 anni, mi è stato richiesto di fare l'esame scritto, in italiano, e la prova finale di guida con il cambio manuale. L'esame scritto consisteva in 40 domande di vero o falso con solo 4 errori ammessi. C'erano 7000 possibili domande da studiare! La prova di guida con cambio manuale è stata impegnativa perché avevo sempre guidato un'auto con cambio automatico.

Anche se all'inizio ho faticato a studiare, ad un certo punto mi sono resa conto

che, sebbene fossero passati 45 anni da quando non avevo fatto alcun esame, ero comunque in grado di studiare, imparare e memorizzare nuove informazioni! Il risultato degli esami: idonea!

Ho pensato tra me e me, se posso fare questo, perché non provare a intraprendere un nuovo ed entusiasmante percorso, quello di un'istruzione universitaria, una laurea e la possibilità di nuove opportunità di carriera?

Forse era finalmente giunto il momento di avvicinarmi al mondo accademico, di aprire la mia vita e affrontare il futuro senza paura con le braccia aperte.

CONCLUSIONE

Credo che frequentare l'università e ottenere una laurea sia il miglior passo che posso fare per realizzare il mio desiderio di vivere una vita utile con competenze specifiche nei prossimi 20 anni.

Le principali aree di studio che mi interessano sono la produzione cinematografica, i media e la comunicazione digitale e il giornalismo e The American University of Rome offre una laurea in tutti questi settori.

Ognuno di questi campi mi fornirà gli strumenti per entrare nel mondo del lavoro quando non potrò più sopportare la vita rigorosa e pericolosa di un artista di strada tipo i conflitti che sorgono con gli altri artisti o quando la polizia applica le leggi complicate e contraddittorie che regolano l’arte di strada a Roma, e soprattutto il costo fisico che il lavoro di strada richiede al mio corpo.
