#HOPE For Cristine
On June 27th 2015, life turned into turmoil for the Ramer Family. Cristine Ramer a mother of 5 children, wife of 20 years, suffered a ruptured Cerebral Aneurysm. One month later she experienced a Hemorrhagic Stroke, paralyzing her left side. She spent the next 6 months in a hospital, repeatedly being told by that she would never walk, speak, or have a meaningful life again. Continuously our family was pummeled with the opinion there was no hope for her recovery.
She is, to this day, severely disabled and still 100% care dependent.
Despite many people encouraging Eric Ramer, her spouse, to leave her in a home and move on with his life, he has stayed with her to this day, according to his faith in messiah, and their marriage covenant under God. As a family, we can testify that through love and faith in Christ, continued work as a family proves that even through the impossible…
Miracles do still happen.
Imagine having your children running through the house, ecstatic, thankful for even the smallest sign of movement in their mother’s limbs. This is what they have been waiting and looking forward to, for so long. “Maybe mommy will walk again soon.” “Maybe she will be able to hug us again,” says their youngest daughter, of 4 years of age. These are the hopes her family has been clinging to, basic necessities that a family understandably needs.
As a family, we are spurred on by the hope that she will walk again soon…
Cristine is the ultimate example of an immigrant American. In 1996, she moved from Brazil to the United States and began helping Eric’s father as a live in custodial care giver. She went to night school learning English at an astonishing rate, learning to fluently speak, read, and write English within the first several months. As an immigrant that knew no English, to learning the ways of American life, language, and culture in such a short time, she has exemplified a true American spirit. And as of July 16th, 2018, we are happy to announce, that Cristine smashed her civics and history exam with USCIS Homeland Security, despite her obvious handicaps, officially becoming an American citizen!
One of our main goals at this point is to get Cristine into a relatively newer type of treatment (insurance does not cover) that has shown great promise for those who’ve suffered stroke and traumatic brain injuries. It is called Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. This treatment has been shown to be optimal after patients have begun the “regenerative phase”, following the initial incident, which occurs usually after the first through fifth year. Our mother is beating all odds showing significant signs of improvement over the last several months. She has begun to show controlled movement on the left side which previously had no sign of improvement. With 40 treatments being the average number of initial needed treatments, at a cost of approximately $250 per treatment, without having any real means of income, to the Ramer family it may as well be a million dollars per treatment. We truly believe this is the answer for our mothers’ full recovery. And with your help, we truly hope this will usher in the recovery our family has been praying for, for so long.
Without God, family, and our friends the road we are travelling would be impossible. The miracle she is still alive and with us, we know is a gift from God. The situation we have been placed in has forced us to humble ourselves and plea for help. We are hopeful for the compassion and generosity of friends and strangers alike, to make this goal a reality.
