On March 9, 2018, my Mom suffered a bad fall down a flight of stairs and sustained a spinal cord injury. In an instant, she went from a completely independent woman, to a woman who is entirely dependent on others for every single aspect of her life (with the exception of swallowing and breathing, luckily). She is unable to turn and position herself in the bed, can not reach over for a sip of water, and has a very difficult time feeding herself. She has become quite contracted in her arms and hands, so she can’t even do something as simple as scratch the top of her head.
Once we knew the full extent of her injuries and that she could very well require life long care, the decision was made to bring her from the NYC area (where she lived, and I am originally from) up to the Buffalo area, where I have settled down. My wife and I bought a completely handicapped accessible house so we could safely bring her up, which we did on July 27, 2018. And immediately I became her full time primary caretaker.
Which brings me to why I’m starting this fundraiser. We had aides in here for an incredibly brief amount of time, but unfortunately we had to cancel our contract with the agency because her money is just simply running out. I can not completely bankrupt her because there are still a ton of other expenses outside of homecare; including all of the equipment and supplies that Medicare does not cover.
So, I am turning to the people we know and love for help. I am hoping that with these generous donations, we will be able to afford 16 hours a day, 7 days a week for maybe 12 weeks of homecare (the average price on sites like Care.com is about $15/hr, so that’s where I am basing my fundraising goal around). All donations above and beyond that will be put toward additional uncovered days of therapy (Medicare will only pay for 3, but ideally she needs 5).
Please help me get homecare aides in here, so I can focus on being her daughter again instead of her nurse.
Thank you so much!
