I met Anita (a former nurse) at the beginning of the pandemic. I joined Canada sews, a network of sewists making masks and caps while PPE was limited.  I was one of her sewing supply mules, driving around the city doing whatever she needed. It was all consuming for Anita, our tireless leader. I still don’t know how she managed to volunteer full time, while working full time. She was a machine!

 

Sadly, now she’s the one who needs our support as she is facing a life altering diagnosis. Late fall 2021, Anita was diagnosed with Stage 3, Grade 3A uterine cancer. Since then, she’s had surgery to remove the cancer and is currently undergoing chemo and radiotherapy.

 

All of this is impeding her ability to make a living and her housing expenses are starting to pile up, including transportation to and from The Cancer Centre at The Ottawa Hospital’s General Campus as she’s there multiple days a week.

 

Those who know Anita, know she has spent her life helping others and how fiercely independent (and stubborn!) she can be about not needing help. I told her that even the hardest of asses, need help sometimes.

 

Any donation is appreciated and, with our help, Anita can focus all her attention on winning this battle and not worrying about her bills.

She is touched beyond words from the support she’s already received from family and friends, including the loved ones who have shaved their head in strength and solidarity.
