On July 20th, our lives were turned upside down. My brother, only 39 years old, woke up to a nightmare—he could no longer see. Overnight, he suffered a retinal detachment in his right eye, leaving him permanently blind on that side, and a severe hemorrhage in his left. He has already undergone two surgeries in an effort to preserve what vision he has left, but the journey is far from over.

The doctors explained that his condition is rare—usually these issues occur in just one eye, but both of his eyes were affected almost instantly. He now requires ongoing treatments, including injections that cost nearly $5,000 each. Even with insurance, the costs are overwhelming. Before this life-altering event, my brother was an independent, hardworking man, a father, a loving son, a supportive sibling, and a true friend to many. Now, he is unable to work, unable to drive, and is learning to adapt to a life that changed in seconds. Our retired mother has stepped in as his caregiver doing her best to support him.

This has been a heartbreaking and humbling journey for our family.
