Let's Help Tom Scott!

While Tom’s career was in the computer industry (as he says “back in the dinosaur days of computers”) he always managed to make time for his first love, theatre, and was president of a theatre company in Shenandoah, Iowa when he was only 24 years old!

Tom Scott has dedicated much of his 76 years to community service through theatre production.  He and his wife founded Camino Real Playhouse 28 years ago.  His commitment to our community became full time almost 15 years ago when his wife retired from the theatre for health reasons. Tom became her care giver and chose to keep the theatre going rather than continuing his career.

Tom was also an active marathon runner and mountain climber, having climbed over 250 mountain peaks around the world. Between those activities and having built hundreds of sets for theatre productions his knees have worn out.  This is severely impacting his ability to build sets, run the theatre and continue to be a caregiver for his wife.  He is a constant giver; however, he is currently living with constant pain.

Although the X-ray shows bone on bone in both knees his doctor has advised that he has just enough cartilage left for him to undergo stem cell replacement which is Tom’s treatment of choice. Medicare could cover knee replacement surgery however recovery time is part of the choice as Tom wants to be able to continue to serve the community without any ‘down time.”  He has a couple of friends who have had knee replacement surgery who have not had ideal results and he fears such an outcome would severely impact his ability to care for his wife during the recovery.

To have both knees done simultaneously with the stem cell treatment costs about $17,000 and that is far beyond Tom’s means at this time.

For Tom, it is critical for all of the above reasons, but mostly because of the constant distress with which he is living.  His spirit is being broken due to the pain.

Contributions will allow Tom to receive treatment, get back to his work in our community and continue to serve as a caregiver to his wife.

The sooner this happens, the sooner he can be back to work in full strength. The stem cell replacement is a fairly quick and permanent solution to this problem. Current shots and pain pills are temporary, stop gap measures for survival but do not provide any healing or restorative work for his knees.
