I have spent most of my life taking care of other people.
Now, for the first time, I am asking for help so I can finally heal.
This $7,500 goal represents a realistic next phase of my healing journey and will help cover immediate treatment planning, medical stability, and essential household expenses while I continue working toward long-term care.
I’ve lived with binge eating disorder since childhood, but everything intensified when I was a teenager. My father was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease connected to his military service, and I became his caregiver. Losing him broke something inside me. Food became the only way I knew how to survive the grief.
Over time, that coping turned into serious health consequences. By my early 20s, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, followed by high blood pressure, high cholesterol, anxiety, panic attacks, and sleep apnea. These conditions don’t just affect my body — they affect my ability to be present for the people who depend on me.
I am 41 years old, a wife, a mother, and a full-time caregiver.
I care for my blind mother and my autistic brother-in-law. I am the one everyone leans on — the organizer, the advocate, the steady one. But the truth is, I have been quietly falling apart.
I’ve tried to get help. I attended a treatment center through my insurance, but after 30 days, I was forced to leave because I couldn’t afford to continue while keeping up with rent, utilities, and basic family needs. Short-term care simply isn’t enough for a lifetime of trauma and disordered eating.
What I truly need is long-term, comprehensive treatment.
That is why I am raising funds to attend Structure House, a highly respected residential wellness program specializing in binge eating disorder and weight-related health conditions. Structure House does not accept insurance, and the cost of the extended stay I need is far beyond what my family can afford on our own.
This is not about vanity or weight loss. This is about survival, healing, and breaking a cycle that has taken so much from me — physically, emotionally, and mentally.
My goal is to raise funds to:
• Attend Structure House for at least one year
• Cover rent and utilities while I am on unpaid medical leave
• Pay for medications and medical expenses
• Cover transportation to and from treatment
• Ensure basic stability for my children and family while I focus on recovery
If you have ever struggled with your health, grief, trauma, or burnout — or if you’ve ever watched someone you love carry too much for too long — I hope you’ll consider donating or sharing my story.
Even if you cannot give, sharing this fundraiser means everything.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. Thank you for believing that caregivers deserve care too.
With gratitude and hope,
Latasha
