CONTRABAN
A Short Film Written by Chelsea Hicks
Winner of The Pan African Film Festival, City of Los Angeles, John Singleton embRACE LA Short Film Competition
WORLD PREMIERE FEBRUARY 2022
We need your contributions to tell this important story!!!
CONTRABAN takes place in a dystopian future where Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) citizens have become the majority of the population in America. As a response, the government has imposed a nationwide ban on BIPOC reproduction until the population reflects those communities as the minority once again.
We follow the heart wrenching story of a Black woman and her husband as they go about their everyday lives, while navigating the danger of illegally conceiving a child in this society.
On this emotional journey, the film audience is shown the intricacies of reproductive rights in this imagined world, while also drawing the connection to today’s reproductive discourse. It also highlights the nuances of relationships formed in citizen-repressed societies that usually incite survival-based behavior.
The main character's plight represents a pivotal conversation about two of the most basic human rights that SHOULD BE afforded to all women: agency over their own body and access to safe maternal health care.
CONTRABAN, the movie, underscores themes of privilege, power, and destructive enforcements as a means to preserve the status of a “pure” America. The results are catastrophic to the joy and fulfillment of BIPOC families that are still battling reproductive sterilization and incarceration. It also speaks to a humble human experience of love, desire, and will regardless of racial identity.
As a filmmaker, I hope to depict a controversially beautiful story that contributes to the greater good of reproductive and maternal health.
However we can’t do this film justice without your generous support. Please consider a financial donation TODAY. Every dollar counts.

Urgency: As a result of the global pandemic, production costs have dramatically increased. Extra money is needed to insure covid protocols and all around increased safety measures are enforced. As well as increased fees for locations, gear, and crew members who have been out of work for over a year. We need artwork and marketing materials, festival submission fees, and more.
On behalf of the entire cast & crew - THANK YOU!!!
Creatively yours,
