Support Relocating Shawn and Yulia After a Devastating Fire

Hi everyone. My home was recently completely destroyed by water damage, from a large fire in our apartment building on September 20, 2024. The unit above ours burnt down entirely, but all the water needed to put out the blaze, came through the ceiling of our apartment and caused severe water damage to our unit. The fire inspector came out and deemed the building unlivable. However, our landlord is not cooperating with insurance companies, leaving us to have to pay our of pocket to relocate. We were told the repairs could be anywhere between 6 to 12 months, and during that time the apartment will be unlivable.

This isn’t something we, or anyone, can go through for 6 months to a year. We have decided if we have to pack up everything we own into boxes and remove them from the apartment, we might as well move it into a new apartment, instead of trying to pay for a hotel and storage unit for months.

However, we, like most people, are not prepared for such a tragedy. Even with our savings, the reality of coming up with 3 months rent move in fees, along side everything that goes into actually moving, is just crippling.

We have an elderly cat, that will no doubt narrow the search results in terms of finding an apartment. But we feel like this solution is much more livable and realistic that going through a 6-12 month ordeal of litigation, paperwork, and an unsafe home.

I feel a lot of shame or weirdness about even doing this, but multiple people suggested I created a gofundme. Any help is greatly appreciated.

All money will go directly towards move in costs related to moving into a new apartment.

The good thing, of course, is that we are all ok. Safe. And everyone made it out of the building. We are so grateful to have each other and together we will get through this absolute nightmare of a tragedy.
