Life in Puerto Rico After María

Tax deductible
Hogar Santa Marta was founded in Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1894 by the Hermanitas de los Ancianos Desamparados (Sisters of Indigent Elders).  Originated in Spain, the sisters belong to a religious community dedicated to caring for any elderly person who is in need due to ill health, low income, homelessness, and/or lack of family to attend to all material and spiritual needs of the elderly person, regardless of sex, race, creed, religion, cultural or political beliefs, health condition, or income .  "It is an institution dedicated to the needs of the aged, specially of the poorest and forsaken." The home presently has 134 residents in all stages of ill health,  physical or mental. These residents are lovingly cared for by 9 nuns, and 82 part-time employees from the surrounding communities.

On Wednesday, September 20th, 2017, Hurricane Maria devastated the island of Puerto Rico. Many homes and businesses were decimated, and Hogar Santa Marta was not spared. Santa Marta still operates with a generator from FEMA, which will need to be replaced. The unprecedented force of the water and wind caused key structural damage, including the elevator, roofs and ceilings, fences, all computer equipment, security system, kitchen equipment, and general structural damage to the physical plant. According to estimated quotations from various contractors, repairs are calculated at about $200,000, not including a new generator and/or installation of solar or other renewable energy systems.

Santa Marta is exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Your donations will directly benefit the entire community that resides and works at Hogar Santa Marta. Funds will go directly to the residence, and will enable this community to start re-construction of their physical plant.

I am not an employee of Santa Marta, but have first-hand experience of the loving care they have provided to each and every elderly person who resides there, including my family members until the end of life. Your prompt response to this cause is greatly appreciated!
