We all have challenges that come into our lives. We surround ourselves with people who love and accept us and with whom we can depend on. When we are facing the difficulties life brings, they stand firmly beside us and face them together. My sister Liz Hallam is one of these people. She’s kind, funny, loyal, loving and one of my favorite people on the planet. She’s also one of the strongest people I know. She was diagnosed with breast cancer and overcame it, proactively having a double mastectomy to ensure that it would not return. When she was told that a new cancer had been found, she didn’t let it destroy her resolve. She came back even harder and recovered again. And now a true test of her strength has come with a third cancer diagnosis. Throughout her battles she has been getting wonderful care from the medical staff at USC. Up until this point things have been going well. But recently her insurance balked at what her USC Doctors were recommending. They instead want her to go by her local, Bakersfield clinic to see a Dr., who she does not particularly connect with (which is never good when facing such a disease) and potentially have additional surgeries that the USC staff has said just aren’t necessary and that Liz does not want to have. They instead would like to have a series of radiation treatments at a cancer center in Bakersfield that the Radiation Oncologist at USC recommended. The Dr's at USC and Rio Bravo are in total agreement in the best path forward for her. Liz’s husband Scott has petitioned against the insurance ruling and has talked to lawyers, but it’s looking like they are stuck. The insurance will only pay for treatments from a Bakersfield clinic that based on research and consultations with her trusted USC doctor does not recommend and this cancer center also apparently has ties to the insurance company itself. So you can see why they wouldn't want her to go elsewhere.
So after much consideration and discussion, Liz and Scott have decided to try and pay for the treatments on their own. Now what they may not realize is that they are not on their own. They have all of us. When you face challenges in this world, you don’t have to face them alone. You can stand together with the ones you love and face them together. The treatments will cost an estimated $15,800. So I’m asking you today on behalf of my sister, if you are able, to stand beside her and donate money to assist with the cost of her radiation treatments. If we are able to raise even half the amount, it would be an incredible help. I trust and believe in my sister and Scott and I think that this is what’s best for her and the right path forward to take.
Thank you,
Brian Hill
