Hello my beautiful, supportive friends and beloved loyal guests,
I never imagined I'd be in this position. I am a planner & problem solver. I pride myself on being well prepared, and I feel quite out of character asking for help, because as you know I’m not one to rely on others. However, my life has taken an unexpected turn. I recently had to have surgery to repair cartilage damage from years of being on my feet behind the bar. My partner has moved out unexpectedly and I now have to pay double rent, and PTO isn't a thing in the service industry.
As a young girl I was always active; playing ice hockey as well as studying dance. I was drawn to the performing arts at a young age and after high school I began bartending. My goal was to move to New York City to study theatre. I moved to New York in 2004 and was hired at a bar before I had even finished unpacking! Bartending helped me pay for my undergrad degree and after I graduated I knew that I was most happy on my feet in the busy and convivial environment of the service industry.
My decades-long year career of being on my feet and walking all over this city combined with a genetic predisposition has resulted in very severe and painful arthritis in my feet. I developed bone spurs in my metatarsophalangeal joint and lost cartilage. Known as hallux rigidus, my condition has limited my range of motion and affected my gait. I worked though the pain because I love what I do. About a year ago the pain was unbearable. I consulted an orthopedic surgeon who told me to quit bartending or have surgery.
For most people who undergo a cheilectomy, they can return to work in three or four weeks but my surgeon as advised me to take more time to heal as my profession is dependent on being on my feet. I need at least four weeks. I applied to receive short term disability and the max I can be granted $170 per week.
Being unable to work means struggling to cover essential expenses, My savings are quickly running out, and I’m reaching out for support to get through this difficult time. Any contribution, big or small, would mean the world to me. If you're unable to donate, sharing this campaign would also be incredibly helpful. I appreciate every bit of kindness and support as I work toward getting back on my feet—literally and financially.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Leya
