We are the 1996 alumni of Cathedral H.S. in NYC and we are trying to raise money for our Dear Friend and Sister, Leslie Hernaiz and her husband, Felix.
Leslie survived a FIRE last night that let loose in her apartment while she was alone, sleeping. The FIRE started in a neighboring apartment but mostly damaged Leslie's and Felix's apartment and all of their belongings. We are grateful that Leslie was saved by the fire department who woke her up in the middle of black smoke and got her out of the unit. Needless to say, though, Leslie and Felix will now need to recover from this loss.
Leslie is a wonderful, kindhearted person who has always reached out to help others in their time of need and given back to the community at large. She has been Executive Director of The Hermanos Fraternos De Loiza which holds the The Festival Santiago Apostol De Loiza en El Barrio every year, a tradition carried down by her beloved grandmother. She has reached out to many of us who have lost jobs to see if there were potential job opportunities at the hospital where she works. Felix is a U.S. Veteran and has served in Iraq, twice. He is also a wonderful husband who has been tremendously supportive and loving with his wife. The list goes on and on with the kind of people they are and we would like to show them the same love in return.
The past few years have been particularly difficult for Leslie and Felix. Leslie is a faithful person but between the loss of family members over recent years, the loss of their daughter last year and now with the loss of all of their belongings and barely making it out of this fire, she is starting to wonder if she has been forgotten.
Please help us let Leslie and Felix know that they have NOT BEEN FORGOTTEN and that there is a large community out there that is here and willing to help them in their time of need.
Leslie and Felix had just moved into their apartment not that long ago and did not have any home insurance so they will need to replace EVERYTHING out of pocket. Finding a new place to live, buying clothes, shoes, outer wear, toiletries, a bed to sleep on, basic necessities, replacing valuable documents and records, etc.
Replacing the damage is really more than we can imagine or put a figure on but we came up with a figure of $5k that we thought would be a good starting point to help them get on their feet again and that they can use as they see fit on the things that are most pressing.
We hope that you will be able to find some kindness in your heart to help our friend and her husband in their time of need, especially during this holiday season. Even if it is just a few dollars, it all adds up.
Please don't take too long to think about it either or leave it for later. Leslie and her husband need your help now! The money will be used right away.
We believe in the power of the human spirit and being able to come together for each other in a time of need! We are grateful for any assistance you can provide!
Sincerely,
Leslie's H.S. Friends and Sisters
