My name is Eric Adams and I've been having daunting "adventures" recently with two separate disabilities. I experienced a spinal injury in Nov of 2016, and then, completely unrelatedly, a neurological disorder bagan in Sept of 2017. Either one of these would be hard to deal with individually, but together they often work against each other.
It took a while to get my medical team, but I now have a set of doctors (Neurological, Pain Management, Physical Therapy and Primary Care) that I've been benefitting from. Working on my impairments has been long and slow, but most of the time we've been making progress (but it's often two steps forward, one step back.) My spinal injury put me in a wheelchair daily for many months, but rehab has now allowed me to switch to using a cane 90% of the time as of last week--a huge milestone! And regarding my neurological disorder, treatment is basically testing out different drugs or combinations of drugs to see which benefit my symptoms most. It's a very long, trial-and-error process.
So I'm reaching out now because my California short-term disability has run out, and I'm still waiting for long-term disability via Social Security to begin. This could be months away still. Also, in the beginning, I couldn't get my insurance to cover any of my neurological expenses (which were many thousands of dollars). Fortunately, I've finally brought both impairments under my insurance umbrella, so new costs are smaller, though past debts are significant.
Once my Social Security begins, I will be able to manage both my daily living expenses and past medical debts. But there is a gap that I'm trying to cover.
This campaign is to cover that gap in coverage. Your contribution will help keep me in my home that is very local to my 4 sets of doctors. And it will buy groceries. Other than that, I live as frugally as I can.
Because I'm stubborn and didn't want to ask for help, I've waited til the last possible moment to ask for financial assistance. I hope you'll forgive me for my proud ways.
I don't need a lot, so I'm hoping you can contribute what you can. I would be most grateful.
P.S. If you can't contribute, you can still help by 1) sharing this, and 2) hanging out with me! My impairments cause me to isolate myself more than I should and most of you know how social I like to be. So let's go do that thing you've been wanting to do!
Thank you very much for listening and helping.
