Our friend and family member George Nicholas Lyon Stewart suffered severe brain trauma and other injuries in a car crash January 16, 2015 in Panama. He needs your help.
The crash occurred when George was returning to Panama City from Linton Bay, where he was leading the team in his dream project of building the best marina and boat yard in the Caribbean. Three months later, after weeks in a medically induced coma and three brain surgeries in Panama, George has been flown to Calgary to begin a long and daunting rehabilitation. His left side is paralyzed and he needs to relearn how to perform most basic bodily functions including speaking and eating. George wants to complete his dream of building the marina in Panama, but this is at least 2 years away.
George and his wife Susana are without income. They have spent all of their savings, including the substantial gifts already received, getting to this point. Susana cannot yet work in Canada and obtaining her papers could take up to 18 months. There are the day-to-day expenses (food, bus fare, etc.), the cost of any additional therapies, and most importantly supplements to support brain function and to help his transition off heavy-duty antibiotics which are not covered by Alberta Health. George’s request of you is to contribute what you can to get him and Susana through the next 12-18 months.
George, originally from Crystal City, Manitoba, was for much of his life a hard playing, fast-moving guy who was known to take risks and to follow his dreams. He has a pioneer spirit, and an engineer brain. He was not afraid to throw “all” into the pot for the next dream. And he lived many dreams! He raced motorcycles. He was a Dr. of Optometry with his own practise and his own lens laboratory. He was a commercial salmon fisher and yachter in Nanaimo, a boat builder in the US and Ecuador, and a marina designer and construction manager in Panama. His diligence and people skills in Ecuador resulted in a thriving boat repair business with a loyal crew of 10 workers. He experienced the joy of the open sea as well as ship wreck and near death in a tropical storm.
But in the last 10 years he has also been an attentive husband; a patient son, very present for his far-away Mom; a loving and compassionate healer who supported both his sisters, Deborah and Marie, when they were struggling with cancer; and a friend to many. George is a helper. If he could, he would work to fix your problem. Now George is in need of our help as he desperately fights to recover. We know he will do everything he can to face this challenge and overcome.
We would be grateful if you would pass this message on to anyone you think might also support George. Please post a note and link on your Facebook page or whatever you are comfortable doing to help get the word out.
