The biggest challenge is that, when you're starting out, the only way to gain real experience in the opera world is to participate in programs that often cost a lot of money. It's not always like this. Once I get enough experience that I have to pay for, I can move on to experiences that actually pay me!
This year I've been offered the title role in Handel's Alcina by the NAPA Music Festival. Getting to do this role would be a huge step forward for me, since roles outside of school are important for gaining credibility in the real world of opera. Luckily, the program is close to my dad's home, so I was able to take $1,100 off of the program tuition that would have gone toward housing. The program is a relatively inexpensive one, but this still leaves $2,200 that I need to pay in order to participate.
The program takes place over three weeks and includes voice lessons and coachings from a top of the line faculty. It ends in fully staged performances of three operas, including Alcina, for which I would have the privelege of singing the title role.
I work full time and save as much as I can, but singing is expensive. I take voice lessons once a week and coachings to continue honing my craft and becoming the best performer I can be.
Many opera singers cope with the expense of their training by seeking help from outside sources. I'll be singing in a competition in June that gives out prizes to the winners, and I have been applying for any available scholarships, but they are few and far between. The most effective way to fund raise, I have learned from my peers, is the support of friends, family, and sponsors. This is why I am here to ask for your help. If you know and love either me or the arts, please help me follow my dream to do what I love and to make art in a world where so many don't get to.
I remember a story I heard, in which a doctor was talking to an artist and the artist said, "What I do is silly, meaningless. I make art... but you save lives." And the doctor replied, "I may save lives, but what you do makes life worth living."
This story taught me that what I do is meaningful. I seek to take people on a journey, to enrapture them and whisk them away on an adventure that will stay with them forever. I seek to entertain and to impress upon the people who come to see my performances, an array of deep emotions and thoughts and, especially, a sense of wonder.
Your donation will help me make beautiful, exceptional art. And not only within the confines of opera. I hope to use my classical training and my experiences with opera to create new forms of performance and to help bring about a rennaissance of the classical arts. I want young people to be exposed to complex and beautiful music, and I want classical music to embrace new technologies, and even more meaningful story-lines and characters. I am an ardent supporter of new music and contemporary composers, as well as new technologies in the arts.
For those of you who love the traditional, I want to continue to perform the classic works. Mozart, Puccini: I want to keep them alive by bringing their music to life. But I also want to keep them alive by bridging the gap between the old and the new and inviting younger generations to experience opera and classical music in ways that excite and inspire them.
Having the opportunity to perform the role of Alcina, my first Baroque Opera and first opera role outside of school, at the NAPA Music Festival, which boasts a stellar staff of Baroque experts, will be an enourmous leap forward for my artistry as well as my credibility in the world of Classical Music. Please help me make my dreams reality.
