Her deep wounds and tissue injuries are still open and need dressing daily, especially where she lost a part of the back of her thigh – that is one of the most painful external injuries and will take the longest to heal, especially because she has to stay in bed on her back 24/7. She can sit, or prop up, for short periods of time. Still unable to walk or put pressure on her hips. For those following, you know she was discharged to Home Health Care with orders to see her doctors regularly, under catastrophic (or emergency) Medicaid, then her case was rejected, appeal pending. Meanwhile she has had NO nursing care for nearly 2 months. She needs to see three main doctors regularly: orthopedic, trauma, and pain management. They are happy to treat her but now require payment up front, about $3,000 just for one round of appointments. She has no idea what to be doing in terms of physical therapy, in preparation for trying to walk again. Can you imagine being sent home from the hospital like this and then not being able to get any medical care?? I mean, they are buying gauze and bandages and tape and sterilized water and gloves and sterile pads, taking care of what they can on the outside, no treatment whatsoever for the inside, and she is in indescribable pain. And she just keeps on smiling, saying she is getting better. // If you are able or know someone who is, will you please consider making a contribution to the online fundraiser? This is my son and to-be daughter in-law. They were preparing to start building a life together this year, getting things in order and planning a December wedding. Things were moving right along. Then, on Easter weekend, Paige was involved in a near-fatal accident. She sustained extensive internal and external injuries that I can't even describe, and a shattered pelvis the doctors said was "the worst they had ever seen." Her injuries were so severe that sedation was necessary around the clock for the first few weeks, they performed a tracheotomy and kept her on a respirator. She was immobilized with a body brace, rods to support her shattered pelvis, stabilizer boots, and traumatic wound care that required surgery several times each week. For nearly two months they did amazing things to keep her alive and save her body.
Meanwhile, my son worked six days a week to keep the bills paid and stay ahead of sudden expenses, like the 50-mile round trips to and from the hospital every evening to visit her in ICU. When she was moved to a room, he was finally able to stay at the hospital in between work days. That was a little relief!
She was finally discharged with Home Health Care (skilled nursing) toward the end of May, much earlier than expected. Maybe too early, as there were numerous trips to the ER for all kinds of problems. Still, she is continuing to recover. She will remain more-or-less immobile for the next few months, and unable to even start trying to walk until December. She requires a hospital bed, wheelchair which she can start learning to ease into- and out-of. She has a trapeze for pulling herself up, and half a living room dedicated to her daily supplies and equipment. Not ideal, but so much better than the hospital. Except...
...Oh, how this hurts in more ways than we can imagine! She had a new medical insurance policy, but its effective date was not until a few days after the accident.NO COVERAGE. Initially, we understood that Medicaid would step in with catastrophic coverage, they helped for two months but any further assistance been declined. NO COVERAGE. The medical bills, over-the-counter supplies, home care devices, and other expenses are piling up. And now Home Care has withdrawn for lack of coverage, and she will be left alone during the days, still unable to get out of bed or walk.
My son is and has been literally paying cash out-of-pocket for everything. Our families have pitched in over the last few months to help defray the stress. My church has been kind and generous. We have tried to help with immediate expenses, even if only to keep regular bills current and groceries on hand. But this has become insurmountable!
The rejection of her case has been a huge blow. Her assigned caseworker is working on a review. That doesn't put milk in the refrigerator or pay the electric bill - but worse, no coverage at all means that every doctor and specialist visit must be paid in advance, every fee for the ambulance must be paid on the spot (she can't ride in a regular vehicle yet), every prescription, every package of gauze, bandage tape, sterilized water for cleansing her wounds, all the equipment, every single thing she needs -- is coming out of one young man's paycheck because he is committed to his fiancée. They are in serious need, folks. No one can afford to do this alone in this day and time! But maybe, just maybe if we all pull together, we can really make a difference and help them through!
CAN YOU HELP?? Immediate Medical Necessities: Home Care, Home Medical Equipment, Doctor Visits, Ambulatory Transportation, Prescriptions, Groceries, Household! They also need things we usually take for granted, but my son can't even begin to think about right now, like A/C service and a smaller vehicle for when she can be moved in a regular car. His company built and installed wheelchair ramps, such a blessing but one of those things we don't think about being connected to medical needs. The list is long, but we can DO THIS!! If you can help, even a little will be appreciated big! More than I can say. Every dollar counts!
