Hi everyone,
We are raising funds to help Mike Wahl cover the cost of Scout’s emergency veterinary care.
Just three days ago, Scout was rushed to the Edmonton Veterinary Hospital with severe abdominal bleeding caused by a tumor on his spleen. Veterinarians drained 2 liters of blood from his abdomen and performed a life-saving blood transfusion. Due to the severity of his condition, Scout required immediate spleen removal surgery—despite significant risks and uncertainty about whether he would survive.
Thankfully, Scout made it through the procedure, but his journey is not over. The tumor is currently being tested to determine whether it is hemangiosarcoma, an aggressive form of cancer, or a benign growth. We are anxiously awaiting the results and hoping for the best. If the tests come back positive for hemangiosarcoma Scout will likely need further treatment.
Scout remains at the veterinary hospital as he continues to recover. The estimated cost of his care has reached $15,000 CAD, which includes:
- Emergency surgery and anesthesia
- Spleen removal
- Blood transfusion
- Three nights of hospitalization
- Pain management, including fentanyl
Four years ago, Mike and I adopted Scout from a couple who were living next door to us in a campground. They kept him in a small camping trailer and rarely took him outside. When they told us they were moving into an aged care facility and couldn’t bring him, they said they might have to put him down if they couldn’t find him a home.
We took him in (despite living in our 12ft trailer that hardly fit the two of us) not knowing what the plan was after that except that we couldn't let this beautiful dog be put down at just 4 years old due to his owners lack of planning. We planned to foster Scout until we could find him a home but after a week of having him I was sure we had to keep him. Mike moved to Hinton, Alberta for work, while the closest dog-friendly rental I could find was in Edson. We spent months commuting an hour each way every weekend just so we could keep Scout in our lives. Eventually, I was able to find work and housing in Hinton too! We took Scout on many camping and hiking adventures in the area and he often came to work with me.
In 2024, Mike and I went our separate ways, but Mike has remained Scout’s sole caregiver ever since. I’ve continued to stay closely connected, receiving updates and remaining involved in Scout’s life from afar.
Any support, whether through a donation or by sharing this fundraiser, would mean so much to us during this incredibly difficult time. Thank you for helping us give Scout the care and chance he deserves.
